I think I ruined someone's date over that when I was a waiter. I walk past a couple at a table and the bloke looks me in the eye and nods, so I automatically nod back and say "all right mate?". Then I just walk past and his girlfriend pisses herself laughing at him.

The immigration panic is just a surrogate for people's despair about crime, the economy and public services. "Fixing immigration" won't help either the country or Labour; sorting out the NHS would do more to stop Farage than a hundred asylum crackdowns.

That's not what I want. I support other people's right to their point of view and I like talking to people who disagree with me - sometimes. I wouldn't drink at a pub which was always full of right-wing political robots ranting about the left. There's more to life than the culture war.
