My father, serving on the USS San Francisco (CA-38), claims to have watched the flag being raised. He often told the story that the ship was near shore bombarding enemy positions. Someone said, "There's the flag," and he looked to see history in the making. Not sure if it was the 1st or 2nd attempt.
