The problem with software is that there's virtually no limit to the complexity it involves. Some people simply prefer a curated experience when it comes to choose their OS.

I believe it's not greed, it's just how market works: when supply is limited, consumers participate in an implicit auction and outbid each other. Basically price goes up until enough people fold.
Things turn out especially badly when demand curve is inelastic and it is such for housing.
