Some of the work for this project was done on the Deck, from the comfort of my rocking chair. Technology has peaked.

This goes to show that software optimization is key, and no matter how much power we crank in our computers, a chip that was bought second hand for a tenth of the price running a newer version might get the same results as your highend hardware with outdated software.

Also it is worth noticing that the more expensive chips are not necessarily better, which was very curious for me. Single core tasks like decimation precomputing happen to have performed better on cheaper Ryzen 5 and 7 chips. 🧵

2025 Zbrush version severely increased performance, while previous ones don't seem to have done much. This might be limited to dynam, or maybe also other processes?
It sped up the res1400 test on the 7950x3D from 3:43 (223s) to 2:14 (134s), while decimation remained the same.

Intel seems to perform better than AMD among its highend chips at the cost of increased power draw.
7950x3D vs 13900K / 14900K in non 2025 zbrush versions,
150 vs 250W constant power draw
res800: 1:15/0:52
res1400: 3:43/2:32

Tests were performed on this sliced mesh, which was auto grouped and dynameshed with groups enabled at resolution 800 and 1400. The 1400 resolution version was then decimated. The same models were used for dynameshing and decimation in all tests. 🧵

Not true. It works great in Netherlands and Belgium because they're flat, but I live in a country full of hills, so unless those bikes are electric then I'd rather walk on a steep hill than try to bike on it.
