I've fallen back into the 70s and am working on my signature beautiful, melancholic dream again.

Something to remind me to be happy.” “I’ve upset you.” My heart falls. “No, quite the opposite, I enjoy being with you.”

“Let it stew,” my sister says as I fuss with the caldron. “But it will stick to the bottom,” I complain but set down the ladle. “That’s the point. The longer it simmers—the harder it is to clean. Then we can finally be rid of the thing.” “I guess.” I stare at the nubs of bone starting to stick up from the water line. Who wants to reuse a pot after killing a murderer anyway?

Running my hand over her coarse hair, I take in all of her. Since we met, the wrinkles and worries have only ever increased. Each gray hair on her head is a reminder that her life’s never been easy. I certainly didn’t make it any easier, but life with them was more than I could have ever hoped for. “Ingrid, I’m sorry.” The words leave my lips as a soft whisper, an attempt to be heard, though I’d rather she not hear me. Turning my body, I slide my legs off the bed. I promised myself that once she started sleeping on her own, I would leave. My hand trails behind me, keeping me where I sit. I don’t want to go back to the way life used to be. I hate myself for thinking that. If I had just refused that extra shift, I would have been here playing cards. I would have been here with them, but I wasn’t. He shouldn’t have died. A heart attack doesn’t have to kill you. The gentle touch of Ingrid’s hand covers mine in warmth. Her hands have always been so warm compared to mine, even in the dead of winter.

She just had to go through the official graduation ceremony, then she could use more than a kiss to explain her devotion. A squeak escaped her lips. Lyn would be there tomorrow, watching her. Merely thinking the Lady’s first name left her flushed, but the excitement was short lived. She needed a better speech. Words amassed in her head, but none were good enough.

As I drop to the floor and open the box, they sit down in their recliners and go about their own activities—Omi with a book and Phyllis with her knitting. After a while, the footrest of a recliner snaps into place behind me. When I look over my shoulder, I see Omi sitting upright in her chair. She’s been so patiently reading while I’ve been mercilessly destroying the K’nex. No matter how I try, I can’t make anything of them. As Omi sets down her book, she leans toward Phyllis and recites three German words in a loving way: “Liebe das Leben.” The wrinkles on Omi’s face crease tightly around her eyes and lips when she smiles at her. Phyllis’s lips curl too, hinting at a smile, but she doesn’t look happy. Instead, she seems sad. Phyllis then adjusts her knitting needles and briefly touches Omi’s hands before knitting again. “Omi,” I scoot toward her. “What does ‘Liebe das Leben’ mean?” “It means ‘Love Life’.” Her gaze rests on me as she speaks, but I still catch her sneak a peek at Phyllis.

Regretfully, I have failed many of you through omission.You stand before me as flesh and blood, but I miss the signs of your troubles. I do not love. My choices have consequences as well and with my words and actions, I have hurt you. I’ll strive to do better with the hours given and remove the plank from my eye. I’ll make amends and love like the three who’ve loved me. Their names are inscribed on my heart, for from their tragedies and mistakes they learned to love deeply. Death is imminent, inching ever closer—no one can escape the grave. So, as I have life, may I live it.

It's Black history month. It's a time to celebrate!! It's time to learn about the men, women, and children who were overlooked because of the color of their skin. Martin Luther King Jr. "[had] a dream" and Langston Hughes' dream was deferred. Maya Angelou spoke of singing caged birds and Ruby Bridges was a 6 YEAR OLD girl that had to have armed guards just to go to school.. Sure you know of Harriet Tubman and you know the name Sojourner Truth, but what about Angela Davis, Shirley Chisholm, and Hiram R. Revels. If you believe "...our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms", then you know that no person is your enemy(Ephesians 6:12). Stop letting racism dictate what you learn and how you love!!! This very short list of Black Americans proves that they weren't DEI hire, they were bad*sses far more credited than I will ever be. If we want to go on merit, then not one of these persons should have been considered second class. NO ONE should have to earn their right to work.
