I don't know that it will do anything to reduce the risk of terrorism per se, but it's a strong, respectful, and appropriate response that Australians can be proud of.

This is a relief. It's felt lately as if not a week goes by that the Australian gun lobby isn't whining about some damn thing. They're as big as the NRA in terms of per capita spending on political donations + campaigns. I hope this sends a strong message on where Australia stands on gun control.

It's not just Segal, either. While the attack itself is both shocking and heartbreaking, the media response and political discourse are just more of the same old shit...
The only things missing from today's headlines are anti-trans rhetoric and the incessant whining of the Australian gun lobby.

Unfortunately, Australia's gun lobby is as large as the NRA and matches their spending, per capita, on political donations and campaigns. The only thing missing from today's headlines is their incessant whining (probably because it looks like the firearms were legally obtained).

I'm torn. On the one hand, how fucking dare they. On the other hand, sending all the Australians stupid enough to still travel there straight to the gulags wouldn't be all bad...

No, actually! It wasn't the usual people. They had oodles and oodles of chocolate letters in stock, which I wasn't expecting, but very little else. I didn't see any marzipan potatoes 😞 ALDI now sells Chocomel a few times a year!

My friends and I were once sitting in a KFC. My partner was noodling around on his guitar when a man stumbled over and yelled rather threateningly, "Sing us a verse or I'll kill ya!" 😂 He has a knack for attracting "colourful characters", usually on trains.

I think it's likely the condition exists in rare circumstances but don't see it as relevant to the justice system. As you say, guilty is guilty. But the language we use still has an impact and people who commit violent crimes for the joy of it ought to all be categorised as one and the same.

As important as it is to take down the vile predators producing child exploitation material, I think it's just as important to prevent it from taking off as a bloody normal genre online. Difficult conversations need to be had.

Along with consent education, I'd love to see more education about human sexuality in general and a strong push for counselling for unsettling/disturbing urges becoming a norm the way counselling for depression has. The world of pornography young people are exposed to must be wildly confusing.

Absolutely, it is. A crime far too many don't take seriously. It's wonderful to see a strong education around consent happening in younger generations. There should be no mitigating circumstances for rape. The sentences served (if any) are pathetic, particularly for child sexual assault cases.
