The cognitive dissonance you describe is very powerful, and can be hard to even recognize, much less overcome.

The kids are told where to be, what to read, what to write, what to do, when to speak, when to be quiet, when to stand, sit, walk, run. Often need permission to use the bathroom, and often denied it. This is public education in one of the largest U.S. cities.

Schools are not generally places where children have rights though. Children’s rights should extend to choosing what they learn, how, and when, with no coercion.

Its not that clear cut: many parents choose homeschooling so they can grant their children as much autonomy as possible. Most schools have a coercive, authoritarian model of education with no meaningful rights granted to students.
