A strong line-up of experts at the European Defence & Security Summit 2025 - the conference of the European defence industry's leading industry association, ASD Europe.

This afternoon: two successive panels about Ukraine and lessons learned from the Russia-Ukraine War.

Should this individual continue to get the red carpet treatment at the Munich Security Conference? Or anywhere else in Europe, for that matter?

A stupid and indeed damaging article by @theguardian.com that champions the outdated luxury beliefs of an American dinosaur regarding anti-personnel mines over the needs of countries that, contrary to hers, directly border the most aggressive country in the world.

Update: Ms Kingsley Wilson, Deputy Press Secretary of the U.S. Department of Defense, has not seen fit to take down a post she made on X in June 2024 in which she used slogans that are fully associated with German right-wing extremism.

It is not unsourced. The source is given in the text shortly before the claim is stated: "According to The Quiet Revival, a survey commissioned by the Bible Society and conducted by YouGov (...)"

And the study does exist and does make the claim you highlighted.

The age of AI in advertising:
- Hey, we detected that you're buying a new dishwasher!
- (I'm glad you know...)
- Clearly, you want to buy MORE dishwashers!
- (No, just the one. Transaction done. Window closed.)
- Come on! More dishwashers!
- (...)

The "Kellogg Plan" - Russia keeps its conquests, UK & France move into the Western half of Ukraine - but not the eastern part.
The US contributes nothing - except thieving of resources.

America, I don't know whether to call you a harlot or a hyena. Or both.

Think I'm overdoing it? Here are the options Miran says allied states should look at:

- accept tariffs without retaliation
- buy more from America
- buy American weapons
- invest in America
- and, not making it up, "simply write checks to Treasury"

U.S. Senator Cory Booker (Democrat, New Jersey) has just broken the record for the longest speech ever given in the U.S. Senate. His motivation: to protest against the agenda of the Trump Administration and inspire his party and his country.

Agree with @andersostlund.bsky.social - unless Copenhagen prefers to do this alone, friends of Denmark should offer to be in the room (whether Trump likes it or not).
For my part, I wish the UK would offer itself as a moderating factor on the US in US-Denmark talks.

This is the key re Greenland. Everyone who knows anything about our existing alliances knows there's nothing the United States objectively needs for its national security that could not have been easily agreed to and facilitated by Denmark.

International Relations, the Peppa Pig version:

"America, Russia, Spain, and Greece won't share the sandpit!"

Teacher: "Is this how you think the countries of the world behave?"

Peppa Pig: "Ehm, don't they?"

It was 100% clear to me at the time, as cuts were being made in the early 2010s. And it was clear to many analysts and commentators too.
My former direct boss at NATO was writing internal papers about it. I supported those efforts when I was there.
Eur. govts were not in the mood to listen.

Below, an AI-generated "photograph" of the bedrooms of the two students mentioned in this thread which provides irrefutable "proof" of their guilt.

Joke aside, the U.S. is now ostensibly a country that arrests and deports foreign nationals simply for disagreeing with U.S. foreign policy.

Pete "muppet" Hegseth had the audacity to type "We are currently clean on OPSEC" while sharing, in advance of events, the operational sequence of strikes on the Houthis in an unsecured, non-classified channel that had a journalist in it.

America Firsters are ideologically very different from the Neo-Conservatives of the GW Bush era. But among American elites, the perception that Europe means weakness has a long history, e.g. Kagan's 2002 assertion that "Americans are from Mars and Europeans are from Venus".

The same people are also aware of Europe's weaker demographic profile & weaker GDP growth, which coalesces into an apocalyptic view of Europe: overwhelmed by Muslim immigration and hence doomed to civilisational death.
An early example of that view was Mark Steyn's 2006 book, America Alone.

This comes to my mind, for some reason.

Stephen King's epic The Stand - notably in its 1994 TV miniseries adaptation - embedded a tale of two Americas, made up of a myriad individual choices of which side to join if an evil leader rose to prominence.

"I will fear no evil" is the motto of those who choose well.

Another example of editorial malpractice at the FT.

This article bears the title:

"EU to exclude US, UK and Turkey from €150bn rearmament fund"

Then para 1 of the article, it adds: "unless [they] sign defence and security pacts with Brussels."

The answer may lie in the title of a film that was made about the racist attackers of 1992 Rostock.

"We are young. We are strong."

A disturbing film, as there's no substance to explain the aggressiveness. Just youths unhinged, darkly adventurous, attracted to strength, detached from empathy.

Since this is going around, I went back and checked.
Yes, Ms Kingsley Wilson, the new Deputy Press Secretary of the U.S. Department of Defense, was posting German far-right battle cries in German on X less than a year ago.

("Foreigners out. Germany to the Germans. Foreigners out.")

This is how the U.S. Department of Defense slobbers over its own decision to destroy a legendary analytical unit it had had since the 1970s, the Office of Net Assessment, which was the envy of every defence analyst in the Western world.
