In 1877, the capital of Dakhla changed from El-Qasr to the town of Mut. In this photo from 1916, local officials were depicted seated in front of some of the monumental houses of the town. But the message was threatening: there was an enemy inside the capital.

Did you know that it was during the First World War that the Ford model T was discovered to be an excellent vehicle for desert transport and exploration?

The car made it possible to draw up the first detailed maps of the Western Desert.

These anthropomorphic figures are a hallmark of Dakhleh #RockArt: large lower bodies, often simple torsos (sometimes w/ breasts, arms, necklaces). Often oval head, though elaborate headdresses also appear. Some show a protrusion. Can you spot it?

In Western Desert #RockArt, giraffes can appear alone or in groups. They may also be accompanied by other motifs.

The pairing of the giraffe with this motif must have carried significance. Do you have an idea as to what this motif might depict?

Most of the prehistoric petroglyphs in Dakhleh depict animals, giraffes being the most prevalent. This is striking, as not a single bone from this species has ever been excavated at Holocene-period archaeological sites in the central Western Desert.
