So what's next? Macron will probably try to find a new candidate for Prime minister, but none of the presidential hopefuls will take that risk. Naming political hasbeens like Barnier or Bayrou has not worked. New elections are thus likely with no guarantee for a less fragemented parliament. end/

In a nutshell, Macron's snap elections of 2024 have left French politics in an unprecedented state of fragmentation and uncertainty. Prime minister Bayrou has been struggling to get (some) things done nonetheless, but the vote of confidence is ultimately a way to admit that he failed. 7/

If the government were to fall, new elections would be a real possibility, but Bayrou hopes that noone really wants that, given the current degree of electoral uncertainty. The far-right Rassemblement national appears to believe they could bring it home. 6/ www.franceinfo.fr/economie/bud...

In this context, calling for a confidence vote is not very common but actually ressembles the use of the "guillotine" (art. 49.3), i.e. a way to force allies to stick to the coalition, as shown by Huber (1996): support my budget or make me step down... 4/ www.cambridge.org/core/books/r...

Over the summer the majority of 11 parliamentary groups have expressed opposition to Bayrou's budget and its auterity measures. Most importantly, Marine Le Pen's RN has listed a number of conditions which would basically make Bayrou an RN Prime minister. 4/ www.lemonde.fr/politique/ar...

Even that is not always granted: as the next presidential election lures (spring of 2027), many party leaders start looking (very) nervously at the polls, leading to hesitations, public attacks on the government etc. (for instance on local electoral system reform) 3/ www.lesechos.fr/politique-so...

The 2024 snap elections called by Emmanuel Macron led to the most fragmented parliament of the history of the 5th Republic. Bayrou's government has really been able to count on 207 MPs (out 577) from 4 groups and the benign abstention of the far right RN. 2/ www.lemonde.fr/les-decodeur...
