reality is not that kind. i’ll wake up in the morning and be fine. he won’t wake up again. there will be no funeral. only complex emotions and unanswered questions. the ground will be littered with unsent letters; pictures collecting dust. there will be an abundance of regrets and what-ifs. too many i knows and i don’t knows. and no shortage of slow healing wounds, ones they will no doubt be forcefully torn open and left deeper, uncovered, and unclean i can miss him be pissed off at him forgive him curse him i can feel all of these things but i can’t go back. he’ll never come back. what he did still hurts. forgiving doesn’t mean excusing. but i understand. he lost against his demons again and again. no funeral. no service. i know he wouldn’t want that anyway. instead, i’ll be here. looking at the stars, making impossible wishes.

the feeling will go away eventually. it’s not my fault— it’s not his fault— there’s no one to blame. the stars are still there. in my dreams months or years from now when my irrationally rational fears would subside i would see him on the street. he would be with new friends or maybe old ones— he’d be sober. he’d have gotten some help he’d have gone on new adventures and maybe he’d smile. and i’d smile back, knowing that this was better than a terse text apology.

they won’t know how much i didn’t want him to be alone, regardless. he was one of my best friends. the ones that don’t know— they’ll only see the black and white of it all. and i’ll be stuck in the gray abyss. drifting, drifting, drifting. i can wish for things to be different but it can’t be undone. i need to live with this. i know i didn’t kill him. but god, it feels like i did.

i couldn’t excuse the crime committed but i can understand how it got to that point. and people will misunderstand. they won’t know. they won’t understand what he did. or why. they’ll never know how hurtful, scary—how confusing that day was they won’t ever know the nightmares— ones that never end they didn’t see the demon that was slowly possessing his body, keeping his soul tightly bound as flood waters rose they won’t know how i saw it in his eyes and knew i couldn’t be the one to save him.

people tend to forget that they can still miss the person that hurt them. you can mourn the person they were. you can still wish the best for your enemies, you can still feel pain when they fall. i’m constantly reminding myself that there’s only so much you can do for someone before you have to step away for yourself. it’s not selfish. i have to believe it’s not selfish. would choosing to forgive and forget have changed everything? no. i can’t dwell on that.
