There's freedom of speech in Soviet Russia, you can speak your mind! (But only once)

The eagle makes me think this is the work of the fans of the Turkish football club Besiktas JK. Their colors are siyah-beyaz and black eagle is their mascot.

I don't think the argument for the price system rests on full information. I think it rests on Hayek 1945, hence precisely on dispersed local knowledge --i said that before. But let's leave it here. I think we clarified quite a bit, and I hope some of our readers (if there are any!) learned a bit.

It's a great book. I'd be very surprised if you didn't like it based on that list of biographies. It's heavier on the ideas rather than personal life, which I appreciated. It's crazy how many fields he's contributed at such a high level.

Based on that list, you'll certainly like this von Neumann biography The Man from the Future. a.co/d/fzSw0It

@danwphilosophy.bsky.social what do you think about this?

Similarly, one can see freedom as instrumentally valuable (it leads to greater wellbeing), or as intrinsically valuable (desirable in and of itself, without having to serve a greater purpose). In fact, imo that's one of the main philosophical disagreements between a utilitarian and a libertarian.

The mass of a gold bar is an intrinsic property -- it's independent of external factors. Whereas its financial value is an instrumental property and only meaningful because of its context within the external world.

I think it's most useful to think about it in contrast to "instrumental"?

I definitely sympathize with this view. Are there any talks or articles you'd recommend on this topic besides the book?

I think pursuing truth is the correct utilitarian strategy long-term

I think I agree with you. Found this piece helpful in thinking through it. www.sciencefictions.org/p/science-is...
Science is political - and that's a bad thing
People who say “science is political” usually aren’t just stating facts - they’re trying to push something on you. Don’t let them

If we stop and pretend there are no ulterior motives behind this, I think the idea is not bad. YouTube did a version of this for their comments some years ago, and it went from being exceptionally toxic to fairly wholesome.

My initial concern with experimental setups like this is that participants might temporarily adopt a zero-sum mindset, treating the situation as if they are playing a game of Monopoly, where the goal is to "win." But this mindset may not accurately reflect how they would behave in real life.
