Our team explored the historical relationship between DOE staffing levels and the department’s congressionally approved funding. We found that because of the recent staffing cuts, DOE now has the largest budget-to-staff ratio in at least a decade.

The Trump administration has reduced DOE’s federal staffing as part of a plan to “rein in bloated federal spending."
