Important to note that Kittel retired at pretty much the same age and I think similar reasons might be at play here.

Spot on. I don’t understand the massive campaign behind this, every other cycling outlet reporting it day in and day out. He’s certainly maximized the visibility, if anything.

Nothing but problems in recent years with all kinds of "adopt-a-rider" weirdness. How this is a surprise to anyone, I don’t know.
