SAME. I really struggled with theory 1 + 2 in college ( I had zero theory training other than reading bass/treble clef) but something about romanticism and atonal music made EVERYTHING click. I just woke up one day and was like

Let's say you're writing in the Key of G, and you decide you want to be spicy and for a small section, make a F NOT sharp, just to be quirky.

In that scenario, you'd add a natural. A natural is kinda like a take backsies-yeah, I know the key says F is sharp, but here, it's not.
November 22, 2024 at 5:20 PM
Sharps and Flats also follow an order-so if we see 1 sharp, we know that's F. If we see 2 sharps, those sharps will always be F and C. Same applies for flats (notice how flats is the same but backwards?)
November 22, 2024 at 5:20 PM
In G major, we have 1 sharp in the key signature-see how the sharp is right in the middle of that F line? That means that in the key of G, F is now F#.

Since the sharp is in the key signature, we don't need to write it in on the staff-it's assumed every F will be sharp.

In C major, for example, there's no sharps or flats, so you'd play only white keys on the piano, and it'd look like this!
November 22, 2024 at 5:20 PM
These are sharps and flats! A sharp means you're raising a note by a half-step (also known as a semitone) and a flat means you're lowering it by a half-step! You see these in key signatures quite a bit-

When counting 4ths and 5ths, make sure to include the note you start on! i.e. C-G, C D E F G (5!) or, G-C, G A B C (4!) When using the circle of fifths, start counting on the note you're starting on, like the example.

You probably noticed these little guys in there too.

Okay, let's now dissect this thing. Whew.
This is the Circle of Fifths. It shows the relationship between the 12 tones in music and their corresponding key signatures!

It moves up by fifths/down by fourths clockwise, and up by fourths and down by fifths counterclockwise.

There's all kind of different time signatures! Here's an example of how to read them! A 2 on the bottom means a half note represents 1 beat. A 4 means a quarter note represents 1 beat. An 8 means an eighth note represents one beat. And so on.
November 22, 2024 at 5:20 PM
Additionally, if you see a C with a slash in it, that means cut time, or 2/2!
November 22, 2024 at 5:20 PM
4/4 is not the only time signature, however it is the most common one. Sometimes, you may see a 'C' where the 4/4 usually is. That still means 4/4! 4/4 is also referred to as common time, hence the C!

RHYTHMIC NOTATION: Rhythmic notation tells us how long we hold each beat! It can also tell us the value of the rest, or how long to NOT play!
A quarter note equals 1 beat of music (in 4/4)!
November 22, 2024 at 5:20 PM
The top number tells us how many beats each measure gets. In the top example, that number is 4! The bottom number refers to the value of each beat-since it says 4, that means a quarter note gets the beat.
wait what the heck is a quarter note-
November 22, 2024 at 5:20 PM
The time signature tells us which note gets the beat, and also how many beats are in a measure. A measure is a unit of music! See the lines after the 4 notes? That tells us it's the end of the measure. So measure 1 has the 4 note pattern, and measure 2 has a rest, or silence.
November 22, 2024 at 5:20 PM
TIME SIGNATURE: Did you notice the 4/4? That's a time signature! BPM doesn't give us all the information we need. The time signature tells us which note gets the beat, and also how many beats are in a measure.
November 22, 2024 at 5:20 PM
Compare that to 80 BPM! See how it sounds much slower?
November 22, 2024 at 5:20 PM
THE BEAT: The beat refers to the pulse of the music! You may see the term BPM-that means beats per minute! In the first video, you can see up top the number 120-that's the BPM!

WHAT DOES IT MEAN: Where the line falls on the staff determines what note you sing/play! To remember line notes and space notes, use a mnemonic!

Source: staventabs.com/music-theory...

I had a student once recommend 'every good boy deserves Fortnite' and I think about that a lot
November 22, 2024 at 5:20 PM
HOW THO: Think of each clef as divided into line notes and space notes. In both images, the line notes are on the top, and the space notes are on the bottom! Line notes have the line moving through them, whereas space notes are squeezed in between.
November 22, 2024 at 5:20 PM
READING MUSIC/MELODIC NOTATION: When looking at a piece of music, the first step in reading it is determining what clef it's in. The clef used determines how you're going to read the music. The most common clefs are treble/bass clef, but alto and tenor clef are used as well!
