Brutal heat caused by the #ClimateCrisis has forced the Eiffel Tower, a nuclear power station and 1,350 schools to close in France.

Unnatural disasters like wildfires, mudslides and violent storms are wreaking havoc across Europe, leading to train suspensions and traffic restrictions.

A constant reminder that even if CO₂ emissions decreased annually as much as they did during the pandemic lockdown from now to 2030, we still wouldn't meet our emission target to keep global warming below 1.5°C.

We can’t afford to curtail existing clean energy sources. I understand if he wants to slow new wind turbine deployments, but taking existing capacity them offline is counter productive.
Trump’s assault on offshore wind threatens factory jobs in GOP districts. Over 64% of manufacturing and supply-chain investment supporting the emerging industry is in Republican districts, per new data, @canarymedia.com reports

As folks are struggling to adjust to our new Regime in the USA, keep in mind that climate progress is global and there are numerous channels where progress continues entirely unaffected by who occupies the White House. Not all of the items on this list, but most of them. Onwards... 🔌💡
Good climate news this (and last) week
1 China reaches peak oil
2 Global electric vehicle sales up 25% in record 2024
3 US bans future oil & gas over 625m acres of waters
4 EU bank regulator tightens ESG rules
5 China’s first-ever energy law enters into force

I would love to be in Kyiv when the last Russian leaves Ukrainian soil. Holy hell, what a nation-wide party will be held! Afterwards, in honor of the fallen and the legacy of Jimmy Carter, I would to strap on a tool belt and help rebuild.

Announcing a ~$6B conditional commitment to @rivianofficial.bsky.social for their Georgia facility. The Georgia factory expand the production from the plant in Illinois and produce S.U.V.s that sell for about $45,000.

EV Projects to Get $13 Billion in Federal Loans

The Trump admin would benefit from preserving reg 30D: $7500 EV tax incentive. US battery industry still far from being cost competitive with China. Eliminating the incentive/requirement for US produced batteries/materials in EVs would lead US EV makers turning to China for cheaper batteries
The $7,500 EV tax credit requires automakers to source battery materials outside China. Cutting it could undermine investment in the U.S. battery supply chain.

Will Trump’s plan to kill the EV tax credit help China?

One of the biggest gaps in hard tech / deep tech climate talent development is recruiting technical leaders with specialty engineering experience (eg,
ME, EE, ChemE, etc).

Three reasons:
1/ They need to be near the physical plant
2/ They need domain
3/ They often require Operations exp.

Growth of off-grid PV capacity is encouraging. Does the declining share of off-grid PV in spite of increasing PV capacity signals switching to clean fuels in developed and growth of grid infrastructure in developing
countries?
Another chart for the day. There is now more than six gigawatts of off-grid PV installed, and its share has never been smaller.

There are differing views about the impact of reaching 1.5C. What should be unifying is the need to keep working towards reducing emissions, bringing more people into the effort, and advocating for many solutions, not arguing which pathways are better than others.
Missing targets RAISES the urgency of near-term action, it doesn't relax it. But setting out unachievable targets as 'do or die,' as has been the case around 1.5°C for a decade, absolutely feeds fatalism. I've seen it so often in the young people I talk to and teach as well as friends & neighbors.

This graphic of clean energy’s efficiency across sectors should be posted on billboards throughout America. Half of the battle is education and awareness.
Key fact: clean energy technologies are vastly more efficient than fossil fuels technologies.

Great visual RMI.

IRA programs are creating over 600,000 jobs across all sectors of climate. President-Elect Trump vows to curtail IRA initiatives and promote oil and gas production. While anxiety is high, the news about the climate jobs market is not all that bleak. www.linkedin.com/pulse/impact...

One of my goals is to help more people get into climate. My personal goal is to help 500 people network into climate jobs by 2030. Outside of my own projects, I’ve spoken with nearly 100 people in the last year. So many great people want to get into climate. it takes a while.

The Inflation Reduction Act is the most comprehensive legislation ever passed to combat climate change. The Biden administration avoids all of the legislative and marketing blunders of the Green New Deal under Obama. The impact of the IRA will be felt for a generation in fighting climate change
The next 4 years are uncertain and it's not clear where climate activism can have most leverage. But preserving as much of the IRA as possible is probably a foremost task.

I talk w/ lots of people who want to work in climate. I share this advice: 1/ give yourself 12-18 months, 2/ approach as a ‘knowledge’ search, not a job search, 3/ pick a lane, climate is a big area, 4/ give of yourself and don’t expect to receive, 5/ help others in their learning 6/ stay positive

To care about climate risks + advocate for climate solutions, we don't have to be red, blue, or green. We only have to be a human living on this planet who loves someone.

As this study shows, "Across every country, love for the next generation is the dominant reason for action on climate change."
