Vermilion flycatcher🪶

📷 Alameda Creek

This bird, which is rare for the Bay Area, was spotted in last year's Christmas Bird Count. No one has seen it for 7 weeks, and a lot of folks have looked. And then it just showed up in the same spot 2 days ago.

I was trying to photograph this beautiful glaucous-winged gull when I got unexpectedly photobombed by a harbor seal that had caught a very large fish--presumably a salmon. 🪶

My only regret is that there are also two BURROWING OWLS at Hayward, which keep getting flushed by longspur-seekers; they’re so well camouflaged that it’s basically impossible to see them unless you’re right on top of them. My apologies to the owls.

And that's it. 6/

The snow bunting is still at Hayward as of this morning, for the 4th day running, & truly couldn’t care less about being surrounded by photographers. Love this little goofball. Fav bird of the year. 5/

But then yesterday, with folks still smarting from the vanished Smith’s, a HARRIS’S SPARROW shows up at Cesar Chavez park—less unexpected than the others, but still a rare bird and very pretty, too. Second lifer in three days! 😍 4/

Whew! Popping back here briefly to discuss a very eventful few days.

On Sat, a SNOW BUNTING appears at Hayward Regional. 😱 The bird is stunning & super-rare in the East Bay. Many birders go to see it. It's living its best life on a white/brown plastic culvert that it maybe thinks is snow? 1/

I mean, look at these spreads! 😍

Huge credit to Rebecca Mills for the art, and AnnMarie Anderson for adapting the text. This was a team effort, and I'm so happy with the finished product.

American redstarts are rare visitors to the Bay. I saw one yesterday but thought I had failed to get a pic.

But zoom in on the bottom-left of the 1st image and lmfao there's the tail.

Worst pic but somehow 100% identifiable: fanned tail w/ yellow base & black tip is diagnostic. So best pic? 🪶📷

Long-tailed jaeger vs Arctic terns. 🪶

Liz & I went on our first pelagic trip--an epic 11-hr voyage in search of seabirds and cetaceans. So. Many. Photos. A personal highlight was watching this jaeger--a seabird that steals food from other birds--flying upside-down in pursuit of terns.
