Friday was my last day working at 18F. It was a team of extraordinary people, but a few things happened that made me realize I had to leave.

Everything happens so much these days, so I thought I’d write down for myself what happened, and how I made my decision:

I had a wonderful job, until I didn’t. This is about what happened—and what is happening.

During the summer of 2020 I was a new grad and unemployed, so I tried to learn some skills. I made an interactive light installation that streamed to Twitch/YouTube that was controlled via chat and a website.

@brendanarnold.bsky.social Hi Brendon, I found you from the creative tech hashtag. I’m also interested in public policy innovation. That public policy lab looks pretty cool!

On Election night I made a scraper that took the #NYTimes election data json ~every 10 minutes and put it on my mechanical display. #creativetech #dataviz This is a timelapse of the night with the sound added back in. vimeo.com/1027074047

Started a project to replay and visualize my rides real time after the fact. This is a screen recording of playing back a ride from the FIT file on Strava. Units are in mph, and using #python to read the data.

@katharinehayhoe.com hi, saw your profile on the discover page. Do you have any recommendations on how people with a CS background can get involved or work in the climate science field? Have experience with microcontrollers, full stack web dev, and interactive art.
