I illustrated in a way I haven’t before… building up lots of cross-hatching and detail… finding a new visual language that I hope spans the many worlds Michael conjures up.

Last year I illustrated a wonderful book of 12 long-ish poems by @michaelrosenyes.bsky.social, ‘Out of this World’.
The poems are profound, thought-provoking and funny - a dream of a job for me to illustrate.
Of course, I fully recommend it! @harpercollins.bsky.social

Le sketching in wonderful Dieppe.
A great place for people watching in bars… one of the best open-air food markets in France and a pair of churches with excellent gargoyles. Plus best way to get to France - Newhaven to Dieppe ferry. Tres bon.

The word prolific doesn’t begin to cover it! He is much missed.
He was very funny with the most infectious laugh I’ve ever known, deeply intelligent and an amazingly inspiring person to know.

If you don’t know his books,
try Meg and Mog for very young children, or one of his amazing pop-ups, Haunted House or Robot… or his incredible silhouette illustrations for Joan Aiken, or the books he illustrated for David Walser… Fairy Tales, 1001 nights.

Jan also designed for the theatre… Beauty and the Beast for the Royal Opera House… an iconic G5 poster from the late 60s, and some beautiful intricate Fairy Tales artwork.

Jan kept sketchbooks at all times, here are just a few. He loved to draw anywhere and everywhere.
Amazing to see how books used to be made pre-computer… with acetate film here.
And a bit of Gallery Five design. (Gallery Five was the design company Jan set up with David Walser & Angela Holder.)

A little bit of the great Jan Pieńkowski to start your week.
These pictures are from Jan’s incredible treasure chest of an archive. He kept a meticulous archive.
(I knew Jan all my life and am now one of his literary executors). There’s so much wonderful work in here to discover…🧵

Hello, hello… I’m introducing myself here and hoping to find much less politics and many more bookish things.
I’m Ed Vere and I make picture books for children… and grown ups.
I put words and drawings together and hope for the best.
Look forward to meeting you.
