I care about high quality education for all, no matter their means or location.
UC interim vice chancellor has resigned. It’s a uni in trouble, but it’s not the only uni in trouble. Universities have shown that ethics around giving young people debt is not something they’re concerned about.
They need to be regulated because they can’t be trusted.

UNE completion rates. I hear such good things about the teaching and programs at UNE, but their policy of let anyone in for any reason for any degree means schools must urge caution when students consider this university.

UNSW is the only NSW university whose completion rates are trending upwards.
That, in and of itself, doesn’t mean they’re being carefully discerning, just discerning. One of the lowest rates of low SES postcodes and the lowest proportion of indigenous enrolments in Australia raises questions.

WSU is one uni proudly proclaiming that rather than measuring a person based on a single number, they look at the whole person.
In 2022 they had 25,00 applications and made 27,000 offers. 110% offer rate.
Discerning? Thoughtful? Caring?

The total HELP debt incurred each year in Australia has far outstripped inflation, averaging over 5.5% on average. This could be explained by numbers if the average debt weren’t rising so rapidly as well. But it is.

Going into debt just for a chance to learn is not serving us well.

It’s not that it happens, it’s that it happens so often, over and over.

Education degree completion rates - Australia wide

The biggest decline in completion rates by degree program in recent years has been in education.

70% of candidates used to complete their degree in 6 years. Now it’s 51%.

Degree completion rates matter because tertiary education isn’t free.

Students beginning university this year will owe more in relative and absolute terms than anyone before than if history is any guide.

We need serious and significant reform to uni entry.

I’m nobody in education. I work with some schools to help them with data. What I do is boring and without me, education would be fine.

But when I asked teachers about their experiences of sexism in schools, I received hundreds of stories like this.

Things can be better than this.

University of Melbourne degree completion rates.

Unimelb has higher 4 year completion rates than the 9 year completion rates for 7 out of 10 NSW universities.

University of Sydney degree completion rates.

Whatever this university was, it’s not that anymore. That massive drop can’t just be attributed to COVID.

CQ University Completion Rates

Completion rates here haven't changed much at all, but they were never great.

Charles Sturt University Degree Completion Rates
About a third of students complete a degree at CSU within 4 years. Just over half will complete a degree at all. But 100% will accrue a debt, so by those terms, their success rate is great.

Charles Darwin University Completion Rates

Degree completion rates matter. Students accrue a debt to attend. Car loans get cars. Home loans get homes. Education loans are getting more people nothing than ever before. Debts are increasing, completion rates are decreasing.

Australian Catholic University degree completion rates over time.
When attending university means accruing a debt which the universities are the beneficiaries of, it is incumbent on them to ensure that candidates are likely to succeed.

But they don't.

Teachers deserve to be safe in their workplace.
Discipline that doesn't result in a change of behaviour is not discipline at all. It's just some punitive measure that had no effect.
If this is how female teachers are being treated, what about female students?
Things have to get better than this.

How much does it cost to study at university in Australia? It depends on the ideological whims of government ministers.

Australian teachers’ experiences of sexism. Full results coming soon.
Whatever good work we’re doing with boys in schools isn’t working as well as we need it to.
