She has plenty of intrigue in her own dating life – but she seems to enjoy it in the movies as well. Mr. S must be a friend of G’s.

She reliably spells extension “extention” and I have to fight with autocorrect. I still have not uncovered what “to buck someone” means. It is not pleasant, so my original guess of giving a dollar to the person does not hold water.

She was worried about her brother a few weeks ago, so that may have been why she wanted to stay home and talk with him. He was a WWI veteran and the youngest of the brothers.

No evaluation of the play – except an underscore under “grand.” She seems to have been positive enough about it not to warn her sister off, unless, of course, she just wanted a ride to Greensboro. She seems to have shifted to calling her brother “Harvey” instead of “Brother.”

Public speaking and memorizing lines were clearly part of public education of the time. The students and the teachers regularly take the stage. I would love to see her in a flapper’s outfit.

No heat = no school. Was the furnace fixed by nightfall so they could practice the play in comfort?

The US and Japan had been allied in WWI, but I’m still surprised there were Japanese costumes available for eighth grade girls in rural NC in 1925.

No explanation of how O’Q got her black eye. Does she get punched during the play? “Took supper with us,” “ate supper with us,” and “had supper with us” seem to be used interchangeably.

It was a busy day, but probably better for her to be too busy than to have a lot of time on her hands to miss her mother.

I wonder what kinds of flowers they put on their mother’s grave. Chrysanthemums might still be blooming. There was a florist in Greensboro in 1925, so they may have gone there for greenhouse flowers – but certainly not on a Sunday.

Whenever she or Bertha was scrubbing a pan, one would look at the other and wink, saying “Leave it in the sink to soak.” When they were young, that was their tactic for getting their mother to finish the job. It’s interesting to see them work out who’s doing what now.

Movies added color before they added sound. “Stage Struck” had color sequences at the beginning and the end, but no sound. From the time I knew her, Bertha was always busy in the kitchen.

Armistice Day declared: 11/11/2019. Greensboro history museum opened: 11/11/1925. Some fellow teachers were veterans of the WWI. I’m sure she’s grieving her mother’s absence. Approaching holidays + short days + rain = tears. M and she remained friends for another 70+ years.

She doesn’t say who’s or what’s to blame for the weaknesses in the play. Have people not memorized their lines? Three students failing is a pretty high percent compared to failure rates today. Maybe we’ll see whether they have a “do-over.”

The “Daily Dozen” may have been exercises that were popular at the time. W was a fellow-teacher. It looks like G is on his way out.

The emphasis on teacher education is encouraging to me as a former Interim Dean of a School of Education and Professional Studies. The kindling is probably for social gatherings, not heating the boarding house or school – though there’s been no mention of oil or coal heat.

No mention of going to “preaching.” No mention of who made Sunday dinner for the family. Are Sister and Brother still there or did they go back to their respective schools? Miss W. is a teacher from Bethany. Does G know her or is he just being nice to drive them?

Even at home she is sad now. I am sure that the shorter days don’t help. The woman who brought the flowers is the same one who had been at the house to inform her that her mother died just a few weeks ago.

She probably doesn’t want to be alone in the house without her mother. And the three full siblings want to be together. Charlie Chaplin probably made them laugh – another good way to ease their grief.

I wish I could decipher the etiquette around first/last name usage. “GH” is the man she has been dating recently. She uses his first name. Saying she doesn’t know what to call another suitor, she shortens his last name to “Mack.” She uses my grandfather’s first name.

The play is a farce, so perhaps it cheered her up a little. I’m surprised that seeing the parents for the first time after the funeral didn’t open up her grief again. The apple cider was probably freshly pressed. It’s that time of year.

If someone told me the score of a game was 9-0, I wouldn’t guess the game was basketball. I can’t find a cousin named “Hilah,” but I assume she’s at Elon with Harvey. The siblings seem to be looking after each other.

We’ll see whether the “extention” classes keep her blues away. The educational system in North Carolina was working hard to make sure that teachers in rural areas kept up. “G” seems to be holding his own against “Mack.”

The family seems to be pulling together. I don’t know who’s doing the cooking during the week. My great-grandfather lived with his offspring over much of the next 23 years until his death.
