Former forest dweller now in a big city. Design. Illustration. Frustration. Libation.
Sometimes it helps to think of it all as a game.

Been thinking about rent scandals and previously being forced out of Rushanara Ali’s constituency because of predatory rent hikes. Added to insights from Landworkers’ Alliance about being detached from our own land, I’ve made a thing.

I like listening to jazz because they play all the notes. Feels like value for money.

So the culture tells me America is a plutocracy now and is in process of imploding. As a Britain I’m consciously decoupling myself and awaiting the demand for child support.

With the current cult of personality in politics I feel like the pied piper of hamlyn is ripe for retelling. Spoiler: they may say they’ll fix your problems, but it’ll cost you your kids.

I haven’t made a thing outside my day job for a while because I’ve been doing people things. Both are fun but I’m looking forward to crap weather and hunkering down with some projects. Good to compartmentalise and not spoil one with beating myself up about not doing the other. It’ll come!

Had a great conversation tonight about what the internet looks like. Back in the day it looked like exploration. It was a library where you could find the peripheral. Now it’s a peep show where you get shown what to look at. I think this is why it’s more difficult to find interesting stuff now.

Keir Starmer is secretly in a ska band. Pass it on.

Working on stuff again. This time a version of Red Riding Hood where the wolf is a metaphor for the fear of death of a loved one. Fun progress between sketching and *actual* layouts for a change. 👍

Keep reading stuff that casually assumes that January (or 2025 as a whole) is rubbish or miserable. Not to brag or anything but mine’s been quite good so far. Getting pretty tired of being constantly told everything is bad. There is positivity out there folks.

Sketching while listening to medieval protest songs is a vibe.

I don’t usually watch horror films because imagery gets stuck in my head easily. But have recently watched some films out of general interest in folklore:

Midsommar
The Witch
Longlegs
The Babadook

They were all good and I laughed when the Babadook got hit in the head with a cricket ball. The end.

More new year resolutions. This time thinking about the difference between self discipline and bullying. I’m trying to be nicer to myself - even (especially) when I need a kick up the arse - because constantly beating myself up is exhausting and unhelpful.

New year and all that. Giving up smoking is tough and I hadn’t realised it makes you cough more than smoking itself - like it’s all been stored up. But with every cough I feel like I’m clearing my tarnished lungs back out. So that’s positive.

This is from over a year ago but was playing around with procreate and the playback animation came out interesting. Maybe it’s worth doing more digital sketching.
