You (and the writers at Wait Wait) were among the first people I thought of when I heard the news. Hoping you haven’t taped yet….

DPP is one where (a) it can be waived; or (b) it can be overruled by the needs of the court.

Based on what this admin has said so far, I see those as being substantial problems.

Matched shoes are a win here! Flawless fit.

Using the GC to prevent questions like “well did you try and find where he is now”?

I mean, I’m sure the Chevy Chase Club hires seasonal workers, so he’s aware there are some South American guys who do a bang up job on the lawns. If the landscaping slips this summer, he’ll know the whole habeas thing didn’t work out so well.

I’m pretty sure that it will be a one-way ticket to getting on Trump’s shit list.

This is the argument that various churches have made (and are still making) for not investigating abuse allegations or in putting in safeguards.

What remains incredibly angering is that wrt voting, the SCOTUS has said that you can absolutely use proxies to discriminate in ways that disadvantage minority voting groups.

Despite the VRA having a section explicitly saying disparate impact can be grounds for a lawsuit. Simply eliminated.

If I remember correctly, Roberts was *very* concerned about the criticism of certain conservative justices, and blamed completely normal news article pointing out how certain judges maybe might be making political decisions.

I'm guessing this won't make next years letter when Musk makes a hit list

Or that there should be more discretion left with the schools because of military need (which is why race can for the moment still be taken into account in a holistic manner for admissions to the academies).

But this is punitive and gross.

Yep. These groups likely cannot be exclusionary, so a guy could join the "Women Engineers" club, for example. But that's standard. And the school could get rid of all school-sponsored clubs. But picking and choosing like this has problems. I'm guessing they will defend it saying it hurts rediness.

Like tomatoes, excitement is considered inflammatory.

50/50 chance Trump forbids the CPI from being published.

Hon, I think you need to get a dictionary. During Jim Crow, people were banned from using water fountains. That another water fountain somewhere existed doesn’t mean there wasn’t a ban.

A guess: Alito wants to write a final opinion funding church schools/allowing public school teachers and to lead sectarian prayer in schools it *and* he wants to retire.

Thomas did too, in order to get remarried. But 5 of the 6 GOPs attended single-sex private Catholic K-12s (most boarding too).

These are not people who have any personal involvement in public education.

This is a gimme appointment. Just hire Florida’s person. Or hey, the person from his first term. I don’t remember their name, which means they did fine enough.

“Coordination” is like the whole job.

Musk's issue isn't a salute, and we shouldn't focus on that. He's supporting really horrible parties worldwide. Including, well, Germany, in the past few months.

We don't need the subtext. The text is sufficient.

Yes: There is a mental illness condition in a portion of people where their brain tells them they have no mental illness. It’s especially tragic. Norm Oriensten’s incredibly talented son had it, and it makes treatment 10x more difficult. And often tragic.
January 19, 2025 at 2:11 AM
It's always good to remember that of the GOP 6, 5 went to single-sex Catholic boarding schools.

And the other one is Alito.

In their lives and their children's lives, public education has *literally* never been a factor.

I think that's bribery. Giving money to a government official for a favorable business outcome.

Can shareholders sue if the illegal bribery leads to an increase in share price?
January 17, 2025 at 10:14 PM
This is like straight bribery. CBS does remember it has stockholders, right?

I might be listening more carefully, but I've heard two people use the term "beggars belief" in commentary on the hearings.

And I think that's because of you!

I always use that factoid when people bring it up regarding Bork. Not other things, but this one, he stayed as a request and thus we got a decision.

On other things, I don't. But I also think he told the truth far more than other nominees after.

And he and Munch had an overlapping relationship history….
