The Times found that as the regime focuses on catching immigrants for civil offenses (unauthorized residence) it is slacking off on policing drugs and guns.

IOW, it’s doing the easy work and skipping the hard work.

Not only did WV’s governor send guardsmen to DC for no good reason. He can’t tell us whether the two who were shot are dead or not.

Just playing with people’s lives.

Meanwhile, Bowser says it was a targeted shooting.

West Virginia’s governor initially said the troops had died, but later walked back the statement to say his office was “receiving conflicting reports” about their condition. The governor’s office did not immediately respond to questions about the attack and the condition of the troops. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser also said the Guard members were in critical condition at a hospital. ”This is a targeted shooting,” Bowser said.

Trump’s chief interlocutor with the Russian government last month advised a senior aide to Vladimir Putin on how the Russian leader should go about pitching the U.S. president on a Ukraine peace plan. That’s according to a transcript of the Oct. 14 call published Tuesday by Bloomberg News. The news agency said it reviewed a recording of the call. It said Trump envoy Steve Witkoff advised Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov that Putin should call the U.S. leader to congratulate him and praise Trump for the Gaza peace deal. Trump described Witkoff’s approach as “standard” in negotiations.

You don’t need a neural net to see this pattern: a new advance offers marginal improvements, which are shamelessly oversold, consumers are disappointed, and anticipation is replaced by a sense of betrayal. Whereupon “AI” becomes a dirty word for the next decade, only for the cycle to repeat, thanks to new discoveries and short memories. The cycle is so predictable that researchers coined the term “AI Winter” to describe the alienation and embitterment phase of the cycle.

The way the Republicans talk about Obamacare, and health insurance generally, suggests one of two things. They don’t know how they work or they do know but are pretending not to for political reasons. If they don’t know, then they’re hopelessly detached from the cares of normal people. If they do, then they’re playing games with people’s lives. What are your thoughts?

The easiest thing for Trump to do is renew the subsidies. Does he have the clout to force the House Republicans into saying yes? Marjorie Taylor Greene tested him and he failed.

The notion that the Democratic party is losing because it is too feminized – too dominated by women among its voters, leaders and candidates, or not sufficiently comfortable with the style of masculinity represented by Platner – has been bubbling up among left and liberal commentators with increasing insistence over the past decade. The idea is that in catering too much to women, and in being insufficiently deferential to domineering, gruff, physically imposing and implicitly white, rural men, the party has come to seem hectoring, inauthentic and whiny, and lost the voters they need to most recruit: that is, the working class, imagined here, as they so frequently are, as brusque, bigoted, ignorant, vulgar and male.

All this smallness is worth dwelling on because authoritarianism depends on whiny little bitches like Tim Burchett getting together with other whiny little bitches to convince themselves they are big and strong when they are actually small and weak, in the hope their whiny little bitching grows large enough and loud enough they won’t ever have to do the hard work of looking for the inner courage to be men. When we stop tolerating their cowardice, things might change.

As I was writing this piece, about how Trump's breakup with Greene is really Trump's breakup with maga, Jake Sherman reported that:
A few other GOP members messaged us over the weekend saying that they, too, are considering retiring in the middle of the term. Here’s one particularly exercised senior House Republican: “This entire White House team has treated ALL members like garbage. ALL. And Mike Johnson has let it happen because he wanted it to happen. That is the sentiment of nearly all — appropriators, authorizers, hawks, doves, rank and file. The arrogance of this White House team is off putting to members who are run roughshod and threatened. They don’t even allow little wins like announcing small grants or even responding from agencies. Not even the high profile, the regular rank and file random members are more upset than ever. Members know they are going into the minority after the midterms. “More explosive early resignations are coming. It’s a tinder box. Morale has never been lower. Mike Johnson will be stripped of his gavel and they will lose the majority before this term is out.”

Not so for Marjorie Taylor Greene. Unlike most people who cannot tolerate knowing that they’ve compounded a young man’s pain, Greene was capable of maligning Hogg even after looking him in the eye. She was capable of recognizing his pain, then of adding to it. “Coward,” she said. “Little Hitler,” she said. Hogg’s suffering wasn’t something to recoil from, as it would be for most people with a sense of empathy. It was something arousing such animosity it turned a teenaged boy into Greene’s enemy. This is not to say Greene does not have empathy. This is to say she’s capable of overriding it. This matters greatly to our national politics. You hear it said frequently there’s so much hate in the world because there’s so little empathy. (This tends to be a liberal view of a problematic, unpredictable, often violent world.) But what if suffering does not arouse empathy? What if, for a lot of Americans, it isn’t something to ease. It’s something to punish. It’s something, on recognizing it, that enrages them more.
