5. The daring British Communist painter & poet Clive Branson fought fascism in the Spanish Civil War & died as a tank commander in WW2 Burma's brutal Admin Box battle. I tell his epic story (+ some other WW2 combat poets) in “A Death in Arakan.”

3. Anthony Gross was a highly intrepid war artist who traveled through WW2 Arakan & Chin State, Burma, armed with watercolor paints. "Drawing Soldiers in Burma" depicts Gross & other war artists of WW2 & more recent conflicts. "Where the Mithuns Are" cover image is by Gross.

2. The mithuns of "Where the Mithuns Are" are a domesticated forest ox of highland Myanmar (Burma) & NE India. Mithuns have been revered, cherished & sacrificed. "Beasts of the Northern Mountains" is about my encounters with these charismatic mammals in Chin State, Myanmar.

2. OSS officer Peter K. Lutken Jr. fought in Kachinland; his exciting memoir "A Thousand Places Left Behind: One Soldier’s Account of Jungle Warfare in WWII" was posthumously published in 2023. Also in '23 Hannah Watson's WW2 Burma novel for young readers, "The Jungle War."

5. As war w. Kachin Independence Army resumed 2011, Myanmar Air Force (MAF) deployed helicopters & fixed wing aircraft. Despite very limited antiaircraft weapons KIA sometimes damaged/downed MAF aircraft. My '13 Project Maje report on Kachin St. air war: projectmaje.org/airwar.htm

3. Aerial bombardment/strafing in Burma began during World War 2. As Japan invaded, Japanese bombers attacked Rangoon, Arakan, other targets. 1942-45 British RAF & US 10th Air Force bombed bridges, roads, railways, supply depots.

18. Dec. '23, 16 mahouts w. elephants joined People's Revolutionary Forces in Bago Region. Sept. '24 Peoples Liberation Army seized 138 abandoned regime Forestry Dept. logging elephants in Mandalay Region, of which 60+ reportedly later shifted to Ta’ang National Liberation Army.
