Bottom line: Both are great (and underutilized!) options to initiate for AUD at hospital discharge. As with everything, would heavily consider local factors and patient preferences in decision-making, but if adherence to pills is a barrier then injectable naltrexone might be a good choice

Both strategies resulted in post-hospitalization reduction in drinking. While there was no significant difference in drinking outcomes btw groups, adherence was better in the injectable arm.

Unfortunately, most hospitalized patients with substance use disorders don't receive evidence-based treatment. These findings highlight that this is a missed opportunity to help millions of people each year ‼️

Those who were hospitalized were unsurprisingly older and had more medical and psychiatric co-morbidities compared to those who weren't.

However, given the underlying prevalence of substance use disorders, tobacco and alcohol use disorders accounted for the largest overall prevalence of hospitalizations.

Hospitalizations were common! 10% of adults with SUD reported past-year hospitalizations including nearly 1 in 4 of those with opioid use disorder.

We used a national survey (NSDUH) to identify US adults with substance use disorders in 2022 and describe their self-reported prevalence of past-year hospitalizations.
