Hee's a thought...to prevent the few picturesque places there are from getting over-run by tourism, how about we build all new places to be picturesque and stop building ugly, soul-less ones?

While interesting on a theoretical level, no amount of driver education (or lane building) will fix traffic. What we need are alternatives to driving so people can bypass traffic altogether.

Building the California High Speed Rail is cheaper than building the equivalent highway and aviation capacity that California will need if the project is not finished:

The comments on this post on Instagram are filling up with entitled drivers who think parking is more important than the lives of NYC kids.

Let's hear it for Jason Slaughter's Universal Law of Cities:

Empty storefronts on E. 9th, Cleveland. Why? Because E.9th has a lot of traffic, so no one wants to linger here. Contrast that with E. 4th, which is closed to traffic (except deliveries). No empty store fronts. Less car traffic=more vibrant cities. Cleveland must do better.

Las Damas Ranch, Chihuahuan Desert. Left: after years of bad grazing. Right: after AMP grazing. Yeah, that one on the right sure is a monoculture! Those cows can't be grazed in a way that mimics nature and brings back her biodiverse glory. It just doesn't work because your biases say so!

It's nice to live in an area that has some walking options. We could do better here for sure, but we are better than lots of places. This is my walk to the doctor's office today.

Motor City or not, if Detroit @cityofdetroit.bsky.social wants to become a more dynamic and financially resilient city, it needs a lot more of photo #1 (trams) and a lot less of photo #2 (cars). Car traffic is what hampers downtown vitality.

Downtown Detroit mostly too car-centric. People Mover: not the best conceived project, but clean and ok for what it is. Nice to have radiant heaters on platforms. Also, no women riders this evening (~7:30pm or earlier at 6pm). Understandable as light use + automation = not perceived to be safe.

More nuance than either point of view here. Definitely truth to how much you walk when visiting Europe, but there is also truth to the problem of ultra-processed food consumption in the US. Suggest this book.

Good street design can include allowing buildings to have porticoes to protect pedestrians from rain and vehicles in the street. Bologna, Italy, which has 26 miles of porticoes. Note: pic #2 was taken on a Sunday. Sunday's are car-free in Bologna's historic center. Usually buses and some cars here.

Pittsburgh'a market square should be car-light (Deliveries, mobilty-limted, ER vehicles only)

Shoutout to Pittsburgh for keeping their bike lanes clear.

Visiting Pittsburgh today. The best part of downtown is hemmed in by hwys with their noise and pollution. Pittsburgh needs to consider some highway removal. Start with this:
