The obsession is more so obsessive fans, a vocal minority who don't represent the actual fanbase. Enjoy the music, have fun with people actually respect what they listen to. They're people like the rest of us yet others grow parasocial and ruin it for everyone else.

I see them as what Linkin Park was in the early 2000s, like genre blending, generally good open writing, rapid success. Add to that the anonymity, the presentation, and the story and lore behind the writings and music.

Highly recommend you listen to their previous album Take Me Back To Eden since it in my opinion it is a more cohesive record overall. The new album Even In Arcadia takes their style a lot farther that it might be jarring at first. I personally like the new album it is very emotionally heavy
