Like so many things this administration is doing, that's illegal (quote from the article: "However, in abandoning Earth science, NASA would be violating the law that created the agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958."). But they don't care and just want to burn things down

A great read on UChicago, arguing we’re seeing the result of decades of mismanagement: “The university’s trustees and leaders view it preeminently as a tax-free technology incubator, and its debt load is so great that it is abandoning ideals it once held dear in order to sustain that goal.”
The Crisis of the University Started Long Before Trump
The University of Chicago is in crisis. Under extraordinary financial strain, it has diminished its faculty-student ratio and hired hundreds of “lecturers”: teachers whom it pays little and whom it do...

Whenever this argument comes up, it's important to resist Paul's implicit exclusionary framing.

What land is "underutilized?" A lot on Benning Road? How about $3M houses a block from the Bethesda metro?

What are the consequences of utilizing that land? Which neighbors have more stable tenure?
If YIMBYs weren’t primarily focused on rezoning single family residential neighborhoods then the name of their movement would be “Yes In That Underutilized Commercial Area Over There.”
I'm so tired of these "YIMBYs only care about upzoning" pieces, man. Is there a single editor at @washingtonmonthly.com who cares to peruse the actual legislative track record of YIMBY groups? washingtonmonthly.com/2025/08/14/c...

This is one of the worst developments in higher education in an era of terrible developments. If faculty classroom speech is government speech, there’s no such thing as academic freedom. It would lead to a collapse of free inquiry and classical liberal education.
Federal court refuses to block Alabama’s “divisive concepts” law, says university faculty classroom speech is government speech with no First Amendment protection. This dangerous development allows lawmakers to dictate what professors say in class. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Jamelle Bouie’s latest is excellent as usual and makes the under-appreciated point that, for all his bluster, Trump’s embrace of emergency powers is a sign of his inability or unwillingness to affect his agenda through conventional means (even though he effectively controls all three branches).

New Yorkers are very concerned about affordability and intrigued by Mamdani's proposals. But in between bites of real Beluga caviar and sips of first-growth Bordeaux, the owners of this 5th Avenue penthouse are making it clear they're not convinced.

So I updated the firmware on my printer and it now knows that the toner cartridges are third party. I had to shell out $300 to buy OEM ones. Don't update the firmware!
