🚨 Read this to see how extremists within the US State Dept have *weaponized the government*. They made a list of journos & researchers they personally don’t like, ideological keywords, and are searching for mentions. They plan to leak, Twitter Files style.

The canceled grands are shock and awe, but the real damage will come from the long-term (massive) reductions in funding to the entire US research ecosystem and the defunding of entire fields and initiatives for training, growing, and diversifying the research workforce.

Great thread @eliothiggins.bsky.social
I do think, though, that the first phase is not only gate-keeping what @mariaressa.bsky.social calls 'holding the line' - it is the long work of maintaining credible institutions - government, media, civil society
🧵 I want to follow up this earlier thread by examining why the USA finds itself in the state it does at the moment; the process of disordered discourse capturing state institutions and how it inevitably results in a slide towards authoritarianism, a process we're seeing unfold before our very eyes.
What we’re witnessing in America is what happens when disordered discourse captures a political party, then the state itself. The Republican Party was the first to fall - abandoning truth for conspiracy, ideology for grievance, and policy for performative outrage.

The circus is starting: Jim Jordan, Taibbi & Shellenberger are congratulating themselves on Twitter Files.

Jordan opens by gloating ab getting Stanford Internet Observatory shut down. Yes: the congressman got 1A protected research shut down. That's censorship.

listening to Jay Gruber discuss Bluesky - we want to build an ecosystem where anyone can particpate in moderation, including third party middleware - a marketplace for sharing apps that help with moderation as a service. Yes - this is such an important aspect of protocol based platforms.
