We look forward to sharing photos, videos, whale sightings, data, action alerts, news and more about the orcas we study here on Bluesky.

If you're new to learning about us, our work is focused in the Salish Sea where we primarily study the Southern Resident killer whales and Bigg's killer whales.

We also study mammal-eating Bigg's killer whales. They look similar to the Southern Residents, but have a different diet, social structure, behavior, and vocalizations. Even though they live in the same region, the two groups of orcas don't interact or interbreed. Bigg's are not endangered.

We have also started making summer visits to observe the Northern Resident killer whales, a group of fish-eating orcas that is doing better than the endangered Southern Residents. This photo of members of A-Clan was taken in Blackfish Sound near Johnstone Strait in British Columbia in 2024.

I wanted my first post here to be a gray whale. So here is our beautiful trailblazing grand lady of the Sounders, CRC 22 Earhart feeding off Whidbey Island.

Sara is on her way home from WA (Western Australia) to WA (Washington), but before she left Bremer Bay she got to meet a brand new killer whale calf that's been nicknamed Wren. Click the link to see more cute baby orca photos!
Rare sighting of newborn orca off the WA coast
A newborn killer whale calf spotted off the southern coast of WA could be one of the youngest ever seen in Australian waters.

The endangered Southern Resident killer whales are the ones who inspired us to start our non-profit. Made up of J-, K-, and L-Pods and currently numbering fewer than 75 individuals, these fish-eating orcas have unique vocalizations, behaviors, and traditions. They range from Canada to California.
