Wish more stuff went with an approach like Kaze's Mario 64 Land hack where levels were more linear and self contained in a way like the 2d mario games, I feel that it would lend itself to making levels feel more like tighter focused challenges

Its a window of about one twentieth of a second to one tenth depending on character which doesn't seem like much but does have a noticeable feel to it especially if you try out different characters like Cammy or Ibuki being on the lower end and Gief or Abigail being on the higher end.

Alot of games also have leniency with jump start up where the first 3-5 frames of a character jumping are still considered in a grounded state and allow them to still pull off ground special moves. Seems small but having that margin of error is very useful specially for things like 360 grabs.
