Went to a “No Kings” protest today, so I made some signs. Over a thousand people (and their signs) showed up. The supportive honking was deafening. #NoKings #NoKingsDay

Foxes have claimed the den under our shed, which explains the disappearance of chipmunks, squirrels, and rabbits. They are beautiful and fascinating to watch.

Once in a while, I find a thing that I really, REALLY want. In this case, it relates to a comic book I read almost 40 years ago from one of my all-time favorite series. Then I discover the item is on sale, and it feels like fate. We live in magical times to see so much novelty!

RIP, Cuisinart coffeemaker. The light is on, but the heating element is done.

*Captain Carter* is standard superhero fare that focuses on the titular character, for which I’m grateful. But writers keep missing the mark when it comes to Carter’s fundamentals: She is a top-notch spy, first and foremost. Comics have yet to match the ingenuity of her TV series.

I have an old-school appreciation of this duo, and I was pleased to see Jason Blood featured so prominently and positively. The art got a bit muddy at times, as stylization overwhelmed storytelling, but I enjoyed most of it. I thought it was OK, but it wouldn’t be everybody’s cup of tea.

I love me some monster-hunter comics! Anthropomorphic animal characters is a curious creative choice, but everything about the story and art hits my sweet spot. Very satisfying and enjoyable!

A “film noir” Plastic Man. Fantastic art, and a story dark as pitch. The protagonist, a (mostly) reformed criminal, finds that the road to hell is a maze he can’t escape, however noble his intentions. Good noir read.

Why does DC reinvent this character every year with a revised origin story? This limited series’ story was decompressed, and the art didn’t land for me. Feeling disappointed.

It started as an Agent Carter story, but she immediately became a secondary/background character, overshadowed by the rest of the cast and now-typical Marvel sci-fi climax. Disappointing.

Today’s read. It was okay.

I forgot how much I love this book! I read it, thought it wonderful and helpful and insightful, then shelved it and forgot its lessons. I need to reread it OFTEN, until I’ve internalized its valuable perspectives. Thank you, Michael Puett and Christine Gross-Loh.

I used to make art. I’ve let the obligations of adulthood force me into survival mode over the last 8 years, and it’s hard to shake off that kind of momentum. I need a creative whack, I guess, to help me re-learn how to hear and honor the truth emanating from my bones.

I used to make art and mouth off. Now I’m just a guy staying off any and every radar, the human equivalent of unseasoned gruel, a protagonist whose loved ones make him vulnerable to dystopian external forces. Nothing to see here; move along.

I remember these kinds of books as my first exposure to comics in the early to mid ‘70s (though I’d already been a fan of newspaper strips for years). I can’t remember the specific issues, so these representatives will have to do. Except for the Blackie Drago Vulture; that guy and issue I remember.
