Yeah, this explanation doesn't really explain Sanctum of All either (or the more competitive players at my LGS lol). It's likely a few different factors, but I do think there's an element of parallel evolution of a greater understanding of *how* to play the game, if that makes sense.

I wonder to what extent a similar shift (in particular, the notion of collaborative storytelling and playing a game together) has in part motivated the expansion of EDH in MTG (which has accompanied a parallel spread of the game generally among underrepresented groups)

Yeah, putting aside differences in court size, basketball size, etc., the WNBA uses the same three-point like as FIBA (that is to say, as the rest of the world, for men and women). The NBA is the outlier, with intention! Ugh.
