Thanks to @royalsocietynz.bsky.social for awarding me the Callaghan medal for Science Communication. Thanks to my many supporters, NZ communities for being curious, & the many people in various agencies who really do want to use evidence in decision-making. This is critical now, more than ever. 🌐🌏🧪

40% of food produced in the world is never eaten. Shocking statistics - how can we reduce food waste? Great @aucklanduni.bsky.social 3MT talk on developing improved processes for cafes & restaurants.

Checked out the roof expts the engineering dept is running @aucklanduni.bsky.social! These are exptl units replicate the Akl Library greenroof - measuring water retention, temp, etc & effectiveness of diff. media. Impressed by the native plant selection- we’re keen to measure pollinators! 🌏🧪

Super cool to see the science Faculty’s 3MT competition. Winners included writing & reading sign language, developing feral cat lures (our own Georgia Pringle!), privacy curriculum development for computer science students & methods for getting DNA off hair without roots. @aucklanduni.bsky.social

I gave the Banks Lecture for the RNZIH - on how plants are important connectors for people & wildlife. And a plug for all the co-benefits using native plant species can give us! www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpfO... 🌏🧪#Aotearoa #urbanecology

There are fab opportunities for biodiversity monitoring using robotic & autonomous systems (RAS) - but it doesn't come without hefty challenges! Really enjoyed thrashing out ideas with researchers working in vastly different systems globally 🌏🧪https://www.nature.com/articles/s41559-025-02704-9

Just what I needed today! A day in the forest with our 3rd year ecology students - plenty of fruit (Dianella, Coprosma) and podacarp seedlings. Wonderful to get the time to get to know our enthusiastic & curious students while teaching them ecological skills & plant ID. 🌏🧪#biosci394 #forestecology

More introduced plant species on schoolgrounds in Auckland than native species. doi.org/10.1016/j.uf...
Native species add biodiversity & cultural co-benefits than introduced species don't add. Use local species!! 🌏🧪https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/2752-664X/ad3f22/meta

In our new paper on vegetation on schoolgrounds we found that every school had at least 1 plant species that could be incorporated into cultural learning around weaving practices - the opportunity exists for school & whānau. 🌏🧪https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ufug.2024.128544

More sportsfields at school = less trees. Make our urban spaces multifunctional - we can have trees around the edge of sportsfields for shade & biodiversity without compromising play. More in our paper on vegetation on school grounds @aucklanduni.bsky.social www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... 🧪🌏

Really important read about the extinction of experience among ecologists - and the barriers to doing fieldwork - both in teaching & research. @kevinjgaston.bsky.social Likely to hinder our efforts to address the biodiversity crisis doi.org/10.1016/j.tr... 🌏🧪
