3rd instar #MarshFritillary larvae fleeing old web on Devil's-bit Scabious leaf in search of new 'home' on a juicy fresh leaf. When they soon moult into their dark 4th instar, they head into hibernation - normally in September. Bryn y Gaer, Hirwaun on @savebutterflies.bsky.social NRW training day.

(haven't had a chance to post...) #MarshFritillary #butterfly larvae & webs at Welshmoor #Gower 1.8.25. I think they're 3rd instar (you can just see 'forked tails' on a few). They may have moulted into 4th instar by now and gone into hibernation - incredibly early. Mid- late Sept the usual date.

#TheGuardian corrected the title in the article to ‘new bee species’, but look!

FYI there is only one honeybee species in the UK. This one is a solitary bee from the Osmia genus. It’s yet another sign of a warming climate (tho a beautiful bee).

Bee people - terrible photo in windy conditions. Is this a male Halictus tumulorum Bronze Furrow Bee? Lovely long antennae. Gower / Gŵyr SW Wales / Cymru (so unlikely to be H confusus?)

String of Sausages lichen - Usnea articulata. Dangly, some inflated sections pinched at intervals. Hanging on a venerable Hawthorn tree in Blue Anchor, Gower / Gŵyr Wales/Cymry. Indicates clean air. It's been turning up more frequently in SW Wales Atlantic temporate rainforest.

Forgot to show the sloping rug of Opposite-leaved Golden Saxifrage at Gelli Hir Wood. The name is so long for such a tiny plant that lightens up damp woodland edges. One of my favourites.

What a shock to see Penclawdd Car Park native wildflower strip has sprayed by Llanrhidian Higher Community Council (not Swansea Council). >60 spp of Gower’s native wildflowers along Penclawdd carpark, something to be proud of. 1/2

Spring wildflowers pt. 2. Barren strawberry Fragaria sterilis - distinguised from Wild strawberry Fragaria vesca by tiny tooth at the leaf tip, smaller than surrounding teeth. The leaves are hairy beneath. It's not barren, it has small green fruit. Lane above Penclawdd #Gwyr #Cymru #Gower #Wales

Can you see the cryptic Common Toad / Llyffant in Welsh (scientific name 'Bufo bufo')? It's been living in the greenhouse all winter - toads have been here for several winters - is it the same one? I don't want to disturb it but I'd like to clear the old plants out.... Gwyr, Cymru / Gower, Wales
