I always find “look after are own first” really means “don’t look after them either”

I think what isn’t highlighted enough is the lack of consistent interest most voters have in politics
A headline issue (“stop the boats” etc) can cut through which renders other damaging policies invisible (privatise the NHS) when you only really look just before voting
