Lovely plate patterns from this isocrinid stalked crinoid- NOT a fossil but dang! sure looks like a "living fossil"!! Skeletons are calcium carbonate. #echinoday

A rather chonky looking comatulid crinoid aka a feather star showing off the myriad of segments on each arm. THIS is why these are so difficult to ID..because its the pattern of these ossicles that are used to characterize them. ha ha. and sometimes they are fused! #echinoday

A 2015 visit to Japan, included attending Wonderfest! which was mostly toys-but there were SO MANY natural history figures and pieces of art! Here were some delightful crabs and "horseshoe" crabs! #crabz

Here's a shot from #Okeanos in 2019 off MIami, tropical Atlantic showing a carnivorous sponge Chondrocladia being devoured by Henricia antillarum! Same kind of sponge recently discovered by @oceancensus.bsky.social recent expedition! In the #deepsea there's always someone eating someone!

Ever wanted to see a closeup on the oral side of a brisingid? This is Brisingaster, a "shallow" deep-sea brisingid displaying many spines projecting into mouth! Spines capture small critters with little bear traps called pedicellariae and tube feet convey to EAT! #echinoday Halloween!
