They made a 30% then a 50% refund offer - the eventually gave up and complied with my politely belligerent recital of the law over and over every 3 days or so.

The Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU governs the rights of consumers when shopping from a distance.

The European Union (EU) requires that consumers have a minimum 14-day cooling-off period when shopping online or through other distance selling methods. This period is also known as the withdrawal period.

It's because asylum seekers can travel on to a third non-eu country - which Britain is. Germany and France have no inclination to stop them once In the water.
