12oz of beer is the perfect increment. 16oz of a double ipa is just too much. we have to go back…

a sign of our changing climate is that the line outside of reds starts earlier and earlier

even after the recent omnibus, federal spending as a share of GDP is still close to its post WWII all time low. there’s just not a lot to cut
May 2, 2023 at 9:11 PM
agree with josh that the debt ceiling wasn’t why spending was reduced in 2011. 82 *democrats* voted against a clean increase that year. people were in a weird headspace a decade ago

whenever someone says the economy would benefit from the federal government doing austerity they should be required to name what they want to cut. it’s very hard to do! https://www.joshbarro.com/p/now-its-time-to-start-the-fiscal?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

the only good part of this review comes at the end where the author notes north sea o&g supplanted coal
May 1, 2023 at 8:55 PM
was the UK not a “hydrocarbon economy” when the country’s plentiful reserves of coal powered the literal Industrial Revolution?
May 1, 2023 at 6:59 PM
why would you use aramco — a company that funnels profits to a royal house — as a *good* model for organizing the oil industry when you could use equinor, a norwegian seo and the other major player in the north sea?
May 1, 2023 at 6:56 PM
what’s up with the recent trend of affixing the word “carbon” to terms that have otherwise clear meanings? https://tribunemag.co.uk/2020/12/how-north-sea-oil-shaped-britains-economy

montreal-based fur traders — voyageurs — would transit to the great lakes by going up the ottawa river, then west to georgian bay, rather than trying to navigate down the st. lawrence
April 29, 2023 at 7:22 PM
erie canal remained well used until 1959 (!) when the st. lawrence seaway was finally completed. in canada this meant that montreal developed as both the major port *and* rail hub

pemmican one of the best illustrations imo that the historical utility of any energy source is a function of its caloric density by the ease with which it can be transported

what explains the 2017 uptick in the commercial use of the Erie Canal? https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/28/nyregion/erie-canal-rebound-commercial-shipping.html

by replacing the hard chocolate exterior with a soft interior chocolate swirl, alden ice cream achieved a technological breakthrough comparable to the invention of the printing press, gunpowder, and penicillin.

mill basin is the weirdest neighborhood in nyc. disconnected from public transit, houses look like something from florida in the 1970s, manhattan silhouetted on the sky line. i want to move there
