Revenue Cutter Service in the Mexican American War

On 23 October 1846, the McClane and Forward joined a small amphibious fleet under Navy Vice Commodore Matthew Perry to capture the strategic city of Tabasco, Mexico.

Running low on ammunition, they reused British cannonballs. Weary and outmanned, the Eagle and her crew were eventually captured but were lauded in the American press for their gallantry. (2/2)

War with Great Britain

When the War of 1812 began, Revenue cutters were called to action. In 1814, the Eagle encountered the HMS Dispatch in Long Island Sound. Overpowered, the captain beached the Eagle, the crew hauled the cannons ashore, and the fight continued. (1/2)

Heavily outgunned and outmanned with many of her crew killed or wounded, the Pickering prevailed after a grueling eight-hour battle and ultimately captured the French ship. (5/5)

On 18 October 1799, the Pickering recaptured 10 American, British and Dutch vessels previously seized in the Caribbean by a French flotilla. Once provoked, the French sent their most powerful privateer in the West Indies to take out the Pickering. (4/5)

The French Naval (Quasi) War

In 1798, Congress authorized military force against French privateers and called upon the Revenue-Marine to support naval operations against the French. During this time, the eight revenue cutters captured 18 of the 22 French ships seized from 1798 to 1799. (3/5)

The new Revenue-Marine served as America’s only naval force until the Navy was reconstituted in 1794. Known later as the Revenue Cutter Service, it served with distinction in later conflicts. (2/5)

Captain Godfrey Carden was the first Captain of the Port. The majority of the nation’s munitions shipments passed through New York and Carden was charged with supervising their safe loading. 4/5

On 30 July 1916, German saboteurs attempted to disrupt the ammunition supply for Allied Forces and blew up a munitions depot on Black Tom Island, New Jersey. The massive explosion flattened the island, shattered windows in Manhattan, and left the Statue of Liberty pockmarked. 2/5

Phil Groundhog, of Punxsutawney, passed peacefully following a short struggle w/a traumatic brain injury. His tragic death was a result of being vigorously shaken like a Magic 8 Ball by a long line of concerned Americans asking questions like “future cost of eggs?” & “Will TVs be more expensive?”
