It was sunny yesterday and I noticed something white sticking out of the ground... And here we are, a bunch of white onions with bright green stalks, and a lot of dark soil still clinging to their roots. (All lying on top of brown cardboard, in a vain attempt to dry out and catch the soil.) I bought a bag of onions right at the end of the planting season, when the bag was less than half price, as an experiment. Turns out that they'll struggle in the front garden, which was drier than usual, but will grow, albeit slowly, in the back where they can get whatever afternoon sunshine we have.

I was unable to get my cheese fix from Switzerland this year, but I think I may be sorted for my chocolate fix!

I was tidying in the garden and pulled out what looks a lot like a spring onion, earlier today. It is sitting on a white dinner plate. The green leaves are long, making it much longer than the diameter of the plate. The roots, on the other hand, are so numerous and long, you could use it as a (very unruly) paintbrush! Now, I said it looks like a spring onion but, when you smell it, it is very clearly garlic! It never did form a bulb... In fact, just moving it in here to take the photo, and this room now smells of garlic!

It turned out to be a miserable, grey, cool, wet Sunday. Needing something to cheer me up, I decided on scones with clotted cream and home-made quince jelly. I love quinces - the floral fragrance that from them just as you raise it to your mouth! They're difficult (and expensive) to get hold of here, difficult to peel/cut/cook but the result makes the effort worth while.

St George's cross flag flying (fluttering to the left) halfway up a lamppost. Below it is a red Royal Mail van, parked up outside the local newsagents. There's a side window on view, with, presumably, some of the items you can buy in said newsagents (I was too far away and at the wrong angle to see properly).

11 mainly green pears all lying (on their sides) on a piece of cardboard. We've had some not very good weather recently, so most of these fell off the tree and have bruises where they landed. Luckily, I found them before the slugs/snails/other creatures did. I'll go out later today, to see if I can rescue any more, especially after yesterday's stormy weather. Even though they feel hard, once you cut them, they are soft and oh so delicious, so delicious.

Managed to get out into the garden between showers today.

I'm so excited! I've got courgettes!!!!!! For the first time ever!!!

Ok, they're not as large as I thought they'd be, and the flowers have rotted, but I managed to get some the slugs/snails/woodlice didn't yet eat!

6 round, yellow courgettes in a colander. One has a small but thick piece of stem still attached whilst another has a green end. The other four all have brown ends where their flowers have rotted. There is also a single, courgette flower - it fell off the plant whist I was cutting these courgettes from their stems. 5 small, yellow, round courgettes growing under large green leaves. Three of them have no flowers because they've rotted off whist the other two still have their flowers attached. Hopefully, they will grow a little more/larger and I'll be able to pick them in a couple of days.

No good bread tonight, and the crumble's finished, so I'm on apple muffins* instead.

*Should've been a cake but, really, who wants to wait 30-40 minutes plus, for a cake to bake, when you can wait 10 minutes instead?

8 heart shaped muffins (little cakes, not the bread ones) in an orange silicone tray, which is sitting on top of a baking rack. It took a lot of restraint to not gobble them up immediately (being so hot they were steaming helped!).

Can you have apple crumble and custard for breakfast?

Why, yes, yes, of course you can!
Two bowls of crumble and thick, thick custard, waiting to be eaten. There's a small piece of crumble left in a rectangular pyrex bowl, and a small pan on a black trivet containing scrapings of custard. (The remaining crumble has gone back in the fridge. Don't worry about the custard though, it was finished off bet quickly.)

I've no cream, no yoghurt and not enough milk to make custard. 😬

An apple crumble just out of the oven (it looks a little pale but everything seems to be overexposed in this photo). In fact, there's so much reflection going on, you cannot see the apple layer under the crumble.

A white onion lying on top of a brown paper bag. There is still still covering part of the onion, and the green stem bends around to the to left and then around the top of the photo. People on my timeline have been posting pictures of their tomatoes; my tomatoes are still green and hard, so I thought I show you a picture of an onion from my garden instead. Three green apples and four, smaller, red ones all on top of the same brown paper bag. The apple crop was a bumper one this year, even though not all the apples look perfect, and the dry weather meant that they taste incredible (most years they taste watery or acidic). There is going to be a lot of crumble for dessert in the near future!

Text message just received in my phone, from the UK government saying there's going to be an emergency alert at 1500 on 07/09/25. Phones will vibrate and make a siren noise. At the very bottom is a message saying I can't reply to it. At the very top is a message asking if I want to save UK Gov as a contact, or report it as spam.

A small green tomato hanging off a plant. Next to it is the bamboo cane supporting this plant, with a green cane topper in the shape of a flat flower. The topper is about 2cm in height, which is about the size of the tomato. None of the seeds were from cherry tomatoes but from normal sized ones; I really hope they'll grow more, I really do. Another tomato plant with a small, green, very unripe tomato hanging in the centre. If you zoom in, there looks to be little flecks of yellow (pollen maybe? I don't know) on the edges of the tomato and on the stems. There are a couple of even smaller tomatoes barely visible, and quite a few out -of-focus yellow flowers (in varying stages of openness). These tomatoes are a flat green colour, unlike that in the other photo, which seems to be darker at the top, almost forming dark green stripes stretching down over the body of the tomato. These seeds weren't cherry tomatoes either.

A very large window (part of a wall of glass) where one panel occupies almost all of the photo. There's not much to see, apart from some grey-brown buildings in the very bottom right hand corner, and what looks to be a Swiss flag (the only real bit of colour, but it's so small as to be easily missed). There is a huge cloud of varying shades of grey, occupying the majority of the photo, rolling from left the right. The bottom edge looks to be floating not very far above the ground; the leading right edge, which is very dmark, has wisps of cloud rolling out towards and just above the buildings. The patch of brightness just above said buildings is going to rapidly be gobbled up by this mass of angry weather. In no time at all, heavy rain is going to come down. (The weather here this week has been all shades of unending grey, but the rain has not been as dramatic. But there is hope that that little patch of blue sky that's about to be eaten up in the photo, will return, and will spread to even here, and the sun will shine again.)

Photo of a ladybird, arse up, head in a yellow flowering plant. There are multiple flower heads on a single grey stalk, heading into the centre of the photo from the left. Branching off the stalk, to the left, is a shorter stalk with several unopened yellow buds. Behind this is some green grass and a greenish hedge. It really does look as though the ladybird is drunk and has fallen into the flowers.

Was going through some files and I found some acetates. Must be from 95-6. I could just wipe off what I wrote, and reuse them... But what for? Does anyone still have an OHP?
Acetates talking about excitatory amino acids used in gravy preparation. The green instructions are rather faded but you can guess how tasty the gravy was. Apparently, potassium may or may not be affected in gravy and who knows what happens to schizophrenic gravy - I, unfortunately, didn't make any notes about that.

A head of geranium (pelargonium? I don't know what the difference is) flowers - they are bright pink in the centre, and this is surrounded by red which then fades into the same central bright pink at the edges if the petals. There are 5 petals to each flower and multiple flowers per stalk (there are 4 flowers visible on this stalk, which itself is not visible). It lives in my bathroom so you can just about make out the dark green leaves in the background, and a beige and blue patterned pot, off to the bottom left of the photo. It is such a flamboyant plant that stuns everyone who sees it. I just wish it wasn't the very last one they had (because it looked very much like the runt of the litter!) because I would've liked to have bought more of them and put them all around either the house or the garden.

A pink multi-petalled rose. The outer petals are all pink whilst the ones closer to the centre are pink towards the edges and base, and a lighter pink in the middle of the petal. It is sagging due to the weight of the petals and all the rain and wind and rubbish weather we've been having recently. (Saying that, this rose bush prefers the cooler, wetter weather as it has really bloomed recently.) There are green leaves of the rose bush and other plants surrounding this flower. It was a good thing I didn't bend down to smell it's glorious fragrance (well, it would be if it wasn't wet) because there's a small yellow and black stripey flying insect immediately to the left of the flower, presumably flying into it.

A stem of foxglove. The open flowers are white, with pale spots running down the bottom of the trumpet. As you go up the stem, the flowers are less open and are progressively more pale, almost a creamy yellow-green colour. In the background are a couple more stems of foxgloves, standing proud against a large green bush and a blue fence. On the ground, mainly in the bottom left corner, amidst the greenery, are small yellow buttercups. Up on the far right hand corner, is a sliver of blue sky. The bees really love foxgloves but there weren't any around when I took this photo.

A bright red, hairy poppy. I've no idea what kind of poppy this is (perhaps a field poppy?), but I call them hairy poppies because they have hairy stalks and leaves. This photo is of a rather striking red poppy from the side of the flower head. Because the camera clearly has problems with red, the petals look more like a thick cellophane than a petal. This is a pale pink hairy poppy from above. It has dark purple (almost black) splodges on the inside of each petal, near the centre. The stamens and anthers are a very similar dark colour. The petals of this one are so thin they look like they're made from paper - an origami poppy, so to speak! 3 orange-red (tomato red?) hairy poppies, all with dark stamens and anthers at their centres. (No dark splodges on the middle unlike the pink poppy.) There are many unopened buds surrounding these three. (These are also the first of the hairy poppies to flower.) Finally, the last poppy photo. These are not hairy ones but your normal type that propagate by flinging seeds around. As a result, there's a bunch of yellow poppies at the edge of a border. They look like large buttercups, but just a shade lighter in colour, although you'd only know this if you could see some buttercups (which you can't, but I could because there're some at another side of the garden).

If someone has to deny that you sound like Enoch Powell, then perhaps we've all read/heard it wrong; if it has to be denied multiple times, then perhaps you are taking a leaf out of Powell's book/speech.

A piece of crochet in a golden yellow yarn. There is a crochet hook with a red handle, and a few bulb pins, sitting on top. Above the work is what remains of the yarn - a small, scraggly bundle. I have to use that to try to finish off the last 2 rows. It's no wonder that the piece has been in time out for the past couple of weeks!
