Great and encouraging ruling. But what an irritating headline, which centers on the perpetrator rather than on the victims. "Blow for OpenAI in Germany as court rules song lyrics used illegally" could just as easily have been, "Victory for artists as court rules OpenAI violated copyright."

“What we have is each other and our will to remake the world.” It's sentiment that's not only true but full of hope, which we need desperately right now. It gives me hope. And I haven't needed one yet, but I bought a whistle yesterday and will be ready to use it if ICE ever shows up where I live.

I love this so much - beautifully, perfectly written. It's been years since I lived in Chicago, but I feel it viscerally every time I see residents - especially those in my old neighborhood, Albany Park - come out in force to do what they can to resist ICE. Very proud of everyone there.

Fantastic piece, @coreyatad.com Wasn't expecting to see references to Won Kar-wai and The Third Man, but it's that kind of deep and creative thinking that shows you how smart Zohran and the many committed people behind campaign have been. Also love this line:

Great review. And what a spectacular show I, Claudius is. Decades later, I still vividly picture some scenes. I really need to watch it again, as brutal and devastating as it often is. The current times certainly merit a rewatch.

Such a good article: thorough & persuasive in its advice to be highly skeptical of all the AI hype, w/arguments backed by actual AI scientists who understand the limitations better than most. Really refreshing to see some in academia pushing back against this credulous insistence on AI everywhere.

"It’s as if climate change had fans." Wow: this line sums up as well as anything I've ever read about the hype surrounding so-called AI. And in the meantime, there are legitimately useful applications of machine learning that are getting little to no attention because of the GenAI bubble.

Really good piece - thanks for laying it out so clearly. As you note, it's a Mafia-style "protection" plan in which only one side has the power to determine what "compliance" looks like.

100 percent this one. I've gone back to it so many times, not just to reread the whole thing but to hunt down favorite passages that are as relevant as ever to today. It's probably Sagan's most prescient work.
