Earth's magnetosphere helps shields the planet from solar wind. At high latitudes, incoming particles can enter the atmosphere and produce the aurora. Stronger solar events can create short-lived disturbances that induce geoelectric fields in the ground.

While aurora are the most visible effect of geomagnetic storms, this space weather can also disrupt electric grids, communication networks, satellites, and GPS.

In the Basin & Range Province, GPS measurements reveal prolonged extension—from infinitesimal motion in eastern Utah to about 6.5 mm/year in western Nevada. The effects of this slow, steady stretching can be observed in the presence of nearly parallel mountain ranges and valleys in the landscape.

As Hurricane Melissa makes landfall in Jamaica, we can see its approach over the past few days on seismometers. Strong winds generated by hurricanes create ocean waves and pressure fluctuations that cause stronger up and down movements in the water column, which seismometers record.

When you see photos of GPS stations, you’re usually looking at the protective radome cover and not the GPS antenna itself. The gray radome helps shield the antenna from rain, snow, and debris buildup and protects it against general wear.

On this day in 1989, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Bay Area during the World Series game between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics. Known as the Loma Prieta earthquake, it caused widespread damage, but the timing of the game likely prevented many additional fatalities.

A M7.4 earthquake struck off the southern Philippines on October 10. Where the Philippine Sea Plate dives beneath the Sunda Plate, complex subduction on both sides of the Philippines archipelago makes the region highly seismically active.

Magnetotellurics (MT) measure the conductivity (or resistivity) of the Earth. Earth’s magnetic field induces electric currents in the Earth. The strength of this induced signal depends on the conductivity of the materials below the surface.
