It's especially funny in retrospect since the anime normally botched the villain plots. AG and DP both had great buildups but terrible climaxes, while BW and SM were just meh all around. The one time they needed to get it right, they did, so credit to them for that

While the Flare buildup was minimal outside of the specials prior to XYZ, the anime did a much better job fleshing out their motivations. Outside of SwSh, I think XY needed a 3rd version the most (I just consider SV a lost cause)

XY's pacing was very weird; up through Shalour, the game was really slow and thus the region felt much bigger than it ended up being. Team Flare also just felt like a weird side plot, kind of like Aqua and Magma but with less buildup.

My hope is that, similar to the last wave we got, we can get another bunch of cards drip fed throughout the coming sets. Ideally with the last two Penguins on Brave, and then a true boss monster.

Yep, it pretty much fixes any consistency issues the deck had. Only problem is the discard cost; the deck tends to run out of gas, and we're still waiting on a great boss monster. But, it'll still be very good in Penguins, and has the potential to be ran in a lot of other water synchro decks.

Ngl, I'm always the reverse. I look for a 6th team member, find a Pokemon I like, but then realize it doesn't fit the team at all lmao.

Yes. Now we just need proper ginger hair again lol

Yeah, I like Mega Raichu X outside of the coloring; it emphasizes what makes Raichu iconic (the ears and the tail) without going overboard like some megas do. Not a big fan of Y because it puts the focus on Pikachu like Mega Feraligatr does Totodile, just less over the top.
October 13, 2025 at 1:21 PM
Yeah, I love Totodile, but I think the focus should've been on emphasizing Feraligatr's features since its the one getting the mega. It looking like a normal Feraligatr in a weird Totodile suit just isn't what I think of when I think "mega" personally.

*DP or XY lol

100% Also, the one we really need to gas up more is AG. Its battles weren't generally at the level of DP or AG, but outside of a few duds, it had a lot of solid ones that should get talked about more.

I don't think that they were equal in that regard, but I do think he had a much stronger connection than trainers like Paul and Sawyer. Brock's comments about his Eevee after the Orange Islands, and his ability to immediately empathize with Gligar's issues, were two moments that stood out.

Gary and Alain were the only ones that showed that "next level", but Gary and Ash were considerably younger than Alain was when they showed that.

In other words, he became much more proactive than reactive. I personally think that the only trainer who was more talented than Ash was Gary. Other trainers like Paul, Sawyer, Conway, etc. were great battlers, but I don't think they had near the connection to their Pokemon as Ash did.
September 15, 2025 at 1:31 AM
We saw this throughout the early parts of the show. He could relate to Pokemon on a level that pretty much no other trainer could, and there were hints to his improv battling style, which would later be refined. By the time AG and DP came around, his battle planning also improved considerably.

Unfortunately, it's impossible for me to really compare him to other protagonists when his progression was so blatantly sabotaged. I still maintain that he should've won Hoenn; instead, he didn't win the league until over 14 irl years later. Ash imo was portrayed as very gifted but very raw.
September 15, 2025 at 1:31 AM
Side note, but I honestly wonder if those decisions in BW impacted how they wrote XY, given that they mostly built up the large scale conflict through the specials. And doing it that way made Alain and Flare's subplot less of a commitment for the first two seasons.
September 5, 2025 at 10:18 PM
BW Ash was somehow less capable at times than his Indigo League self; I think the bar was beyond hell tbh 😂
September 4, 2025 at 7:53 PM
Oh, that's just covert misogyny there then
September 4, 2025 at 7:51 PM
They started hot too with the jumping off of a building scene, but I agree, they really toned him down for most of the show. The argument I never understood was this iteration being the "mature" one. DP Ash was incredibly mature, he just didn't put up with shit.
