Yeah... The intro episode scene that comes to mind does not paint a great picture for the series, but I also vouch for whoever has told you to keep going! I know it's a pretentious thing to say "The manga is better", but this one has a really stellar manga, not to discredit how good the anime is.

I also noticed that. I wonder if it is set up in lots, so the older ones are just descendants of the newer ones. Thats my headcanon cause it's really cool if so.
