Our first thanks must be to Eoin Price for organising such a important British Shakespeare (BSA) conference on "Shakespeare, Race, and Nation" at Swansea University in 2019, and to all the speakers and auditors at that event. We are especially grateful to all the speakers who took part in that conference's "Shakespeare and Translation" seminar, whose papers and discussion points helped shape the inaugural idea for [this book]: Luis J. Conejero-Magro, Carolina Conte, Coen Heijes, Marina Kitzma, Maureen McDonnell, Paulo da Silva Gregorio, Michael Slater, Kathryn Vomero Santos and Roberta Zanoni. We are very appreciative of the time Preti Taneja spent talking to us about translation via Teams during the global pandemic, as this conversation helped to inspire new ideas and to consolidate others that have benefitted the collection well beyond the interludes themselves. Thank you to Varsha Panjwani and Brandi Adams for their input during the essay collection's formation, and to Sijing Lu for taking the time to share her translation expertise as the volume neared completion. Thanks also to Jessica Chiba and Tetsu Motoyama for their roles on the organising committee of the "Found in Translation: Understanding Shakespeare through Intercultural Dialogue" conference held at Waseda University in 2022, which included helping the delereach Tokyo at a time when the logistics were still rather challenging! The ideas discussed at this conference led directly to the creation of an additional chapter, as well as adding further impetus to the collection as a whole. Finally our biggest thanks must be to our contributors for working so closely and supportively throughout.

The present crisis on UK Higher Education is primarily a crisis of funding but it is also a crisis of conviction and of hostility towards intellectualism and any other forms of expertise. It's a crisis that requires trade unionism, along with its respect for 'the trades' themselves. It may sound odd to describe academia as 'a trade', but it is. And, like any trade, it is vulnerable to false claims of redundancy.

I would like to suggest that to argue effectively for the necessity of thought and reading in the university is actually to stop universities from being entirely market-driven corporations. The real issue is to find ways to create and to retain spaces for thinking and reading in the university. This means not ignoring the changes that are that are currently taking place within the university, while also not becoming caught in the twin nets of debilitating cynicism and despair. Some days this is pretty hard to do. I would even hazard to say that lately it is getting more difficult. Part of the difficulty is that there is no instruction booklet that explains how new spaces for thinking and reading are to be constructed within the university. Yet I do believe that the study of literature can continue to create some of those spaces; fostering thought through reading is one of the crucial things that literature can continue to do.
