Also, I thought the 1925 was a reprint. I've seen some pictures suggesting that. Did reprint it and then release a new edition?

Update! The book arrived and is in decent shape. It’s the first edition, with some water staining. But pretty good for a $50 copy of Karsten (instead of the $600+ you usually see them listed at). Pages are clean and they’re all there!

Since I have both the old and new editions, here they are together with a creepy rabbit sculpture for size comparison.

Well look what showed up in my mailbox today! Very exciting!

The new iOS image playground isn’t entirely clear on the number of legs and tails on a standard-issue cat. It’s a typical generative AI issue, but I figured they’d have done some more work to avoid such obvious issues.

This is an interesting chart 📊, not just because of its content. The time axis here strikes me as relative rather than absolute, since the values aren't tied to the years. They'll be different next year, so they're relative to when the chart is made. From www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/...

The last thing you hear from X, once you've deleted your account, is that deep inside, it's still Twitter.

I got started in BASIC, and I turned out okay.

This made me dig up an old dashboard of mine about my running data 😅 I stole this idea from sales charts that show sales over time (months, quarters, etc.). Cumulative charts like this are pretty common and useful. 📊 public.tableau.com/app/profile/...

This is a pretty great example of showing potential in a 📊 chart, or “nothing” in @visualisingdata.com terms. From a story about a math test for LLMs that they all pretty much fail at, and that they can’t be trained on because the actual questions are secret. arstechnica.com/ai/2024/11/n...

I find this little chart by the @washingtonpost.com a much better representation than the needle (especially the static needle that doesn't even show uncertainty). The overlap shows the uncertainty, and the range above and below the line gives you a sense of the chances.

The Kindle Colorsoft is getting absolutely murdered in the reviews right now. I'm returning mine. It has the yellow bar on the bottom, but there's also something weird with the battery where it never reaches 100% charge, even after 20 hours of charging. The colors are nice, but there are trade-offs.

Finally, DLA can also create the kinds of vertical growth that Martin was talking about, with or without fancy/silly colors. In this case, there's consistent motion in the vertical direction, and random motion horizontally.

Alternatively, you can launch particles from the outside and only allow them to move inward, which makes more of these snowflake-type shapes. Excuse/enjoy the silly colors 😅
November 2, 2024 at 2:53 PM
DLA has particles moving around randomly, or somewhat randomly, until they hit other particles, at which point they stick and you launch another one. Back in 1992, those were single pixels. Starting in the center, and restricting the motion to only go outwards, you get these dendrite-type shapes.

Updated to iOS 18.1, but I still have to join a waitlist to get into a beta for Apple Intelligence?

The new Tides app in watchOS 11 shows sunset and sunrise times in addition to the tides. I guess there are uses other than photography where this might be useful, but it’s also really helpful for planning photo shoots.

I also like the way Flux shows the top of the hour. What time is it? It’s TWO! It’s SIX! It’s EIGHT! Simple and to the point.

I’ve been enjoying the new Flux watch face in watchOS 11. It has a fun design, and I like the sort of part-to-whole sweep of the divider to show seconds. You can watch the minute fill up from the bottom to the top.

I’m at 182, which is apparently bluer than 90% of people taking the quiz. And yes, turquoise definitely looks green to me.

While we were gone last week, a pair of birds built a nest in the rafters under our deck. Of course I had to install a bird cam 😄 (though looks like I can’t post video here, unfortunately)
