I just finished reading Oliver Twist for the first time. My takeaway is that, for all the overt and heavy-handed anti-capitalist messaging, Dickens' sympathy for the unwashed masses is limited to the abstract- the few impoverished characters to be fleshed out are defined by their avarice.
