The movie blew and got awful reviews. Also, if you look at marketing budgets - I’m guessing that movie had more $ behind it than any that year - and still grossed 9th. Waterworld finished 10th in gross box office in 1995. No one would say that was a hit either.

There was a lot of hype for it. They had midnight screenings and all. But it was far from a hit.

I sang Deacon Blue at a small post wedding karaoke party with my wife in front of her non-drinking, sober family. Needless to say “drink scotch whiskey all night long and die behind the wheel” didn’t quite hit the mark with this crowd.

A) in 2025 you can’t accurately retro-assess a band that was popular and its prime in the 90’s and B) people who liked them in the 90’s aren’t going to travel in the Delorian back in time to reassess what they liked in 1990 because maybe the don’t sound the same or as good 35 years later.

I worked at a move theater when this came out. The projectionist locked himself out of the projection room during the 10:00 show. The picture went out with about 2 minutes left so people could hear but couldn't see the big finale (spoiler alert) when the sewer rat becomes infected. People rioted.

Maybe you/the media weren’t asking the right questions. SDSU was 3-7 in quad 1. Xavier was 1-9. 7 of UNC’s quad 1 losses were to 1 or 2 seeds in the tournament. UNC showed they belong after last night. SDSU - not so much.
